Montgomery County Clerk and Recorder Sandy Leitheiser reminds voters who received a vote by mail ballot for the November 3rd, 2026 General Election to return their completed ballots as soon as possible.
Voters may return their completed ballots by either placing them in the mail, placing them in the secure outdoor Ballot Drop Box on the north side of the Historic Courthouse in Hillsboro, or by delivering them directly to the County Clerk’s Office on the first floor of the Historic Courthouse in Hillsboro during regular business hours. County Clerk business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Ballots must be postmarked no later than November 3rd, 2026, to be counted. However, voters are encouraged not to wait until Election Day to return their ballots. Returning ballots early helps ensure they arrive at the County Clerk’s Office in a timely manner.
Leitheiser stated voters who vote by mail ballots cannot drop them off at polling places on November 3rd, 2026 Election Day. Election judges have been instructed not to accept vote by mail ballots at polling locations. Voters who wish to hand-deliver their completed ballots on Election Day must bring them to the Historic Courthouse and either place them in the secure outdoor Ballot Drop Box or deliver them to the County Clerk’s office before polls close that day at 7:00 PM.
“Your vote matters, and we want to make sure every eligible ballot is returned properly and on time,” said Leitheiser. “If you’ve voted by mail and haven’t returned your ballot to us yet, please take a moment to return your vote by mail ballot as soon as possible. If you plan to hand-deliver it, bring it directly to our Historic Courthouse in Hillsboro, either to our Ballot Drop Box or to our office—not to your polling place.”
Specimen Ballots are located on the county webpage www.montgomerycountyil.gov along with other important information.
