Lucas Farms Neighborhood Association Lucas Farms Neighborhood Association in Iowa City, IA. Embracing our eclectic, eccentric funkiness and diversity and coming together as neighbors.

Robert Lucas, the first governor of Iowa, had his farm here and he was responsible for building Plum Grove. We are proud to call this area our neighborhood, where we live and work. The Lucas Farms Neighborhood Association was started by Sandra Armbruster and our initial meeting was on April 27th, 2014. We had 50 people attend even during a thunderstorm and tornado watches.

The requests for yard signs keep coming in, which is AMAZING. We love seeing our community come together. 🖤🧡

We’ve already distributed 500 signs throughout our community, and now we’re hoping to order 500 MORE!

Seeing these signs popping up all over is such a powerful reminder of how many people care about our neighborhood schools and want their voices heard. Thank you so much to everyone who has already donated, shared, picked up a sign, or helped spread the word. It truly means so much to our little school.

To order the next 500 signs, we need to raise $2,540 + tax. Any amount helps us get closer!

💰 Venmo: -michelle
Last 4 digits: 9456
Account name: Michelle Wiegand

Please put “yard signs” in the Venmo note.

If you’d like to contribute but don’t have Venmo, please send a message and we’ll figure something out!

Important: We aren’t able to process individual sign orders through Venmo. Right now, the priority is raising the funds so we can get another batch ordered and out into the community as quickly as possible.

If you’d like to request a sign once they’re available, please fill out this form:
https://forms.gle/x3JCqLPHt8UMgQwC8

500 signs are already out there. Let’s get 500 more out and make it impossible to miss how much this community cares about our schools. 🧡🖤🏫

Thank you for continuing to show up, speak up, and support our schools!

What has been the most scary thing about living in Lucas Farms this year? We know! The never-ending CONSTRUCTION and maintenance that literally never ends!
The noise! The mess! The mud! The early morning wake-up calls when your house is shaking! The horror!
If you live on some of these streets you know all about “The Nightmare on Yewell, Franklin, Ash, and Pine Streets!” They have been getting major updates to storm sewers, sidewalk accessibility curbs, water main repair, renewed street surfaces and much more. Road work that was originally started in mid-May and to be completed by mid-September has now extended into late October and possibly, according to recent “No Parking” signs, been extended to November 30th! Oh my!
🦺🚧We are very grateful for these major improvements and thankful to City employees for their hard work. Some of the work is being done by other independent contractors. We hope they all complete the job with a thorough clean-up and re-landscaping of damaged areas so we can get back to normal!
🦺🚧There was also resurfacing, patching, water main repair, pothole repair, and other construction on Diana Street, Kirkwood Court, Pickard Street, Highland Avenue, Deforest, and more. A much needed and over-due repair of the storm sewer at the south end of Broadway Street was also completed. So THANKS to the City for prioritizing these repairs to our neighborhood infrastructure!
🦺🪾Ironically, our neighborhood was also scheduled for a mutilating of our trees by Mid-America who contracts with Asplundh. Oh my! The noise! The merciless sawing and shredding of tree limbs! Some of our lovely trees now look like they belong on a horror movie set! The chainsaw terror has gone on for weeks!
🦺⛈️It has also been a time of EXCESSIVE re-roofing after those scary hail and wind storms earlier this summer! The hammering, the hassle, the horror! Ok, maybe a bit over-dramatic, but it has been a lot!
🦺🔨 Finally, it has been a season of increased home improvement projects! We’ve seen a lot of construction going on! From re-siding to renovations to restorations of historical properties, it has added to the noise and parking issues but it has also been encouraging and exciting to see!
🎃🚧 We love Lucas Farms, even if it has been an unusually crazy season of chaos! We try to stay positive on this page, but we’re dropping that standard for this post. Feel free to vent here and share your feelings if you’ve endured the psychological torture of frustration and annoyance! And let’s all hope for a safe, calm, and quiet Halloween!

Who’s watching? These Lucas Farms residents and a few others are emotionally invested in the Brewers. Could this be the final game in the series? A clean sweep? At this point, there is still a “Ray of Hope” for Tampa Bay! Game on!

Ok Lucas Farms Brew Crew. We’ve seen your flags on South Summit and Highland Avenue. Any other super fans out there? Here are photos from tonight’s watch party at American Family Field. They’re from a Lucas Farm native and his family. Let us hear from you Brewers fans out there and tomorrow night we will do another post. (To encourage any Tampa Bay fans in Lucas Farms, there’s still time for a turn around.)

📖🪦📚🪦📖🪦📚🪦📖🪦📚🪦📖🪦Halloween-Fall post # 11. Cemetery Walk at historic Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Every fall, the Johnson County Historical Society brings to life the stories of people at their gravesites in cemeteries throughout Johnson County. This year the event was at Oakland Cemetery. There was a great crowd that made its way around to the resting places of interesting Iowa Citians from the past.
Six unique stories were featured including Lucas Farms alumni, Eleanor Hoyt Brainerd. Your Lucas Farms historian portrayed her story. Eleanor was born in Plum Grove in 1868. Her parents had purchased the home from Friendly Lucas in 1866. They moved here from Indiana. The family had business connections in New York City, connections to the Underground Railroad in Indiana, and Finkbine Golf Course is also connected to the family history!
In 1869 Eleanor’s father died when she was only one year old. Eleanor’s mother was a strong woman of faith and in spite of having 4 children to raise (2 of her 6 children died around age one) she managed to parent and contribute to the Iowa City community in many ways. Eleanor, the youngest, went on to become an author of many books and serialized stories in popular magazines of the early 1900’s. Three of her books were made into movies! At least one starred Mary Pickford. But there is SO much more to the Hoyt-Brainerd-Borland story! I’ll add photos of my script that you can click on and hopefully read to learn the rest of the story!
