UPDATE: Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Releases Details of Coralville Reservoir Fatalities

October 23, 2026 (JOHNSON COUNTY, IA) On September 22, 2026, at 12:10 p.m., the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of two subjects in the water at Lake Macbride State Park near the Coralville Reservoir. First responders recovered the two subjects and both were pronounced dead at the scene. Hannah Jorgensen, age 24, of Tiffin, was recovered on September 22 and Ahmed Osman, age 10, of Iowa City, was recovered on September 23.

The Sheriff’s Office investigation revealed that Jorgensen and Osman were at Macbride Nature Recreation Area as a part of a School of the Wild class field trip attended by 5th grade students from Borlaug Elementary. Jorgensen, a 5th grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary, led a group of 14 students on a woodland hike, ending near the shore of the Coralville Reservoir, south of the Lake Macbride Spillway. As part of the field trip curriculum, the class stopped and ate lunch near the shoreline.

During the stop for lunch, Osman stepped into the water flowing down the spillway and slipped on the rocks, causing him to fall into the water of the Coralville Reservoir. Jorgensen immediately jumped in the water to rescue Osman, leaving her phone on the shore. Once in the water, she directed her students to call 911. One student used Jorgensen’s phone to make the call while other students alerted a bystander on the other side of the spillway. The bystander also jumped into the water to rescue Osman and Jorgensen but was unsuccessful, though he managed to return to shore safely. The bystander stayed at the scene with the students until first responders arrived and was interviewed. The remaining 13 students were escorted back to the school by staff and all students were later interviewed as part of this investigation.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Johnson County Metro Dive Team, Johnson County Emergency Management, Solon Fire Department, North Liberty Fire Department, Swisher Fire Department, Lisbon Fire Department, Mt. Vernon Fire Department, Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center, Johnson County Ambulance Service, University of Iowa Police Department, North Liberty Police Department, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Iowa State Patrol, US Army Corps of Engineers, UI Air Care, UI MED ONE, Johnson County Medical Examiner, and the Story County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident remains under investigation by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and there is no further information available for release.

🫶 We'd like to give a big THANK YOU to Dunn Brothers Coffee for celebrating National Coffee with a Cop Day with us! They generously hosted the space and even provided free coffee for those who came to chat with us. We were joined by our friends at North Liberty Police Department and Coralville Police Department - and K9 Karl, of course! 🐾

We love an excuse to drink coffee ☕️ and spend time connecting with our friends and neighbors in Johnson County. Let's do it again sometime!
