🚲🚶 JSO Bike & Pedestrian Safety Enforcement
November 3, 2026 - Early May 2027

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) has announced another round of high-visibility bicycle and pedestrian traffic enforcement throughout Duval County, funded through the Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM) and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

Why It Matters
➣ So far in 2026, there have been 33 fatal crashes involving pedestrians or bicyclists, compared with 31 at the same point in 2025 - an increase of 6.5%.
➣ This effort complements Jacksonville’s Vision Zero Action Plan, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and reduce serious injuries by 50% by 2035.

What to Expect
➣ Additional traffic enforcement in high-traffic areas throughout Duval County.
➣ Officers focusing on educating drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians about traffic safety.
➣ Warnings or citations for traffic violations, depending on the circumstances.

Safety Reminders
➣ Drivers: Watch for pedestrians and cyclists, particularly near intersections, crosswalks, and driveways.
➣ Cyclists: Obey traffic signals, use required bicycle lights at night, and wear reflective clothing.
➣ Pedestrians: Use crosswalks when available, follow traffic signals, and confirm drivers see you before crossing.
➣ **Everyone:** Stay alert and avoid distractions near roadways.

Neighborhood Watch Signs - Update

While going through my photos for this week's Trashed on Tuesday post, I came across this Sheriff's Watch sign I photographed on October 11 and realized I'd forgotten to share an update.

I'd previously contacted JSO about obtaining Sheriff's Watch signs for Sans Souci. When I spotted this one, I took a picture to use as a reference, then followed up.

After that follow-up with JSO, another officer was brought into the conversation to help address my inquiry. They're still in the middle of a move, so I'll share additional information when I hear back.

I've included the original photo information from Google Photos showing when and where I took the picture so you can locate it too.

The graphic shows the results for non-apartment residential only incidents. Here's how Sans Souci Community Watch (SSCW) has worked with residents and JSO to improve neighborhood safety.

1. A NEW SANS SOUCI BENCHMARK

SSCW is working to make security checks, crime awareness and proper reporting everyday habits that reduce opportunities for crime. The objective is fewer actual incidents, not simply better statistics.

2. YEAR-OVER-YEAR IMPROVEMENT

Since 2024, SSCW has built a neighborhood-specific analysis and verification process, combining JSO incident data with resident observations to identify patterns, develop practical guidance and communicate actionable concerns.

3. ACCELERATING CRIME REDUCTION

SSCW translated its Mid-Year Crime Report into practical tools: the Security Camera Planner, automated 6 PM/9 PM reminders, Connect Duval guidance and targeted theft-prevention recommendations.

4. DAMPING THE CRIME CYCLE

SSCW used continuous monitoring, ad hoc crime reports, fact-checking and even middle-of-the-night verification drives to distinguish genuine threats from ordinary concerns - keeping neighborhood attention and limited JSO resources focused where they mattered.

When real risks emerged, SSCW responded with targeted prevention, apartment outreach and direct JSO coordination. The objective: consistent, measured intervention rather than overreaction or complacency.

5. SUSTAINING THE IMPROVEMENT

Recurring reminders, monitoring and follow-up reinforce prevention as a continuing habit. Even during litter cleanups, I observe neighborhood conditions - from tire marks to discarded liquor bottles - looking for information that may warrant attention.

6. SSCW INFORMATION GAINING TRACTION

Thank you to the residents using SSCW tools, reviewing the guidance, bringing concerns forward and helping make this process work. Your continued involvement is essential!

To ensure you have the information, SSCW increased Nextdoor publications 475%, alongside SSCW page posts, SSNA group distribution, direct outreach and expanded website resources. October website activity is also on track to increase another 7.5% over September.

More people are accessing SSCW information and tools. Residents are participating. Residential crime is declining.

The goal isn't simply to report crime. It's to establish and sustain the processes that help prevent it.

Sans Souci Crime Update - Through September 2026

Before posting Sans Souci Community Watch's Q3 residential crime reports, I wanted to share SSCW's analysis of neighborhood-wide offense trends. These figures include offenses throughout Sans Souci - so not just residential areas, but also apartments, businesses and other locations.

January–September 2026: 357 offenses, -18.3% from 2025 and -25.0% from 2024.
12 months ending September: 463 offenses, -18.2% from the prior year and -25.8% from 2024.

Sans Souci has experienced tremendous success since the start of SSCW - improvement is accelerating - but continuing that success requires JSO, SSCW and participating residents, apartments and businesses to work together.

So, thank you to the residents, apartment communities and businesses who have used the SSCW process - bringing concerns forward, asking questions, using SSCW prevention information and tools, and helping SSCW communicate effectively with JSO. That participation is what makes the JSO-SSCW-community pipeline work.

And thank you to JSO for the enforcement, investigations, patrol activity, specialized-unit support and community outreach that ultimately make these improvements possible.

If you haven't participated yet, join the SSCW network and help build an even stronger community partnership with JSO.

I wanted to share that beginning in 2027 I’ll be serving a two-year term as one of four District 3 Sheriff’s Watch Co-Chairs.

I’m looking forward to working more closely with JSO, the other co-chairs and Sheriff’s Watch liaisons across District 3 to share useful information, practical ideas and approaches that can help our neighborhoods.

Through Sans Souci Community Watch, I’ll continue working to Inform, Prevent, Connect - developing practical resources for residents and strengthening connections with JSO and other public-safety partners.

For Sans Souci, I hope this additional involvement provides another avenue to bring useful information, resources and ideas back to our neighborhood and help residents work together toward a safer, stronger community.

Concerned about speeding in Sans Souci? Video can help - and measuring what it shows adds helpful context.

Some recently posted neighborhood traffic videos provided a useful example. These are exactly the kinds of traffic observations residents can send to me at [email protected] for review - video, location, date and time can help determine whether there is a recurring problem and what action, if any, is warranted.

Speeding is a legitimate neighborhood safety issue when it occurs, but a fair assessment of the videos helps determine the appropriate next step. So I reviewed the videos frame-by-frame against measured road distances to estimate speed. Six of eight videos showed vehicles traveling around the 30 mph statutory speed limit; two showed vehicles closer to 40 mph. One vehicle appeared twice - once around the limit and once speeding.

So what can Sans Souci Community Watch do with observations like this? Put each observation in context, seek corroboration, determine whether it is part of a pattern, then help determine whether a JSO traffic complaint or another response is warranted and help the resident with the complaint if needed.

JSO is reminding everyone that hurricane season is only halfway over - and now is the time to make sure preparations are in place.

To build on JSO’s five reminders, Sans Souci Community Watch has a preparedness page with additional planning information and resources:

Sans Souci Community Watch is now formally recognized by NOAA as a Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador™.

The Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador program brings organizations together with NOAA and the National Weather Service to strengthen community preparedness and resilience to extreme weather, water, and climate events.

For Sans Souci, this creates another way to connect residents with credible information, preparedness guidance, and practical steps that can help before severe weather strikes.

I’m also looking forward to opportunities to work with NWS Jacksonville on local weather vulnerabilities, preparedness, and education.

A safer neighborhood is a more prepared neighborhood.
