Special election planned after Jacksonville city councilman announces resignation Councilman Terrance Freeman is set to run for an elected position in the Florida Legislature.

The Jacksonville City Council has called a Special Election for the At‑Large Group 1 City Council seat on Tuesday, August 18, 2026. This election will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Councilman Terrance Freeman. If no candidate receives a majority on August 18, a Special General Election will be held on November 3, 2026. Qualifying runs from Noon June 11 to Noon June 12, 2026. If you recently relocated to Florida, don’t forget to cancel your prior voter registration. It isn’t done automatically. Contact the elections office in your previous state and request to cancel your voter registration. This helps keep voter records accurate and ensures no one can vote in your name in another state. Attention Statewide, Multi-County, County, and District Candidates: The pre-qualifying period began today at noon. Candidates must file complete qualifying paperwork and pay any qualifying fees with the Duval County Elections Office.
