SBI INVESTIGATING INMATE DEATH IN ONSLOW COUNTY DETENTION CENTER

PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICE
October 12, 2026

ONSLOW COUNTY – The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is investigating the death of an inmate at the Onslow County Detention Center over the weekend.

Around 4 a.m. on Sunday, October 11, 2026, a detention officer with the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office found Christopher James Brookins, 55, of Kinston unresponsive due to an apparent medical emergency in his cell. The detention officer immediately notified the Sheriff’s Office on-duty medical staff, who quickly responded and began life-saving measures.

Onslow County Emergency Services also responded. Despite life-saving measures, Brookins was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Onslow County Sheriff Chris Thomas immediately requested the SBI to investigate the death and notified Onslow County District Attorney Ernie Lee.

Brookins was arrested by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office on August 19, 2026, for felony s*x offender unlawfully on child premises, felony probation violation, and misdemeanor parole violation. He was given an $85,000 secured bond.

The cause of death is pending an autopsy, and any further questions regarding the investigation should be directed to the SBI.
