Fire managers are closely monitoring conditions for a potential weather window to start ignitions on the Salt Cabin Prescribed Burn, located two miles southeast of Rustic, Colo. If required conditions are present, ignitions on units could begin as early as October 29. A closure order is in effect for the project area and the Salt Cabin Road (Forest System Road 259): https://www.fs.usda.gov/r02/arp/alerts/salt-cabin-prescribed-rx-fire-closure

The Salt Cabin prescribed burn will improve timber stands and reduce natural fuel build-up and hazards in the project area, maintaining low fire hazard conditions created by a previous prescribed fire and the Cameron Peak Fire of 2020. Weather outlooks, fuel moisture and other indicators are monitored leading up to potential weather windows and checked on-site directly prior to any ignitions. If required conditions are not present, ignitions are postponed or cancelled. More information on the Salt Cabin Prescribed Burn is available on Inciweb: https://inciweb.wildfire.gov/incident-information/coarf-salt-cabin-prescribed-fire

Rafael Salgado has led Cal-Wood Education Center for more than two decades, helping generations of children and families build a connection with Colorado's mountains. After wildfire burned 600 acres of Cal-Wood in 2020, that mission (and the importance of preparing the forest for the future) became even more personal. Watch the video and then tell us the benefits of the Colorado forests that matter most to you. Matters

"My legacy will be to leave Cal-wood ready for the next 40, 50 years."

Quick, without looking, recite the phone numbers of the two people you trust most. If you can't, you might not be as prepared as you think. When an emergency strikes, you may not have access to your personal phone.
