UGA Troup County Extension Your trusted local source of unbiased, research-based information in agriculture & natural resources.

UGA Extension was founded in 1914 to take research-based agricultural information to the people of Georgia. Through the cooperative funding of federal, state and county governments, Extension agents are in almost every county in Georgia. County agents and specialists throughout the state share information on issues like water quality, profitability in agribusiness, family wellness and life skills. UGA Extension coordinates 4-H, Georgia's largest youth program. Each year, almost 200,000 young Georgians participate in community projects, summer camps and conferences on today's issues while having fun and learning to work together. The leadership skills and responsible values they learn in 4-H last a lifetime.

Here’s the reveal! Did you spot the praying mantis hiding among the leaves?

A mantis's coloring and body shape can provide excellent camouflage while it waits for prey. Mantises eat many different insects, including garden pests as well as beneficial insects.

Just another example of how much is happening in the garden when we take the time to look closely! 👀

It may be October, but it’s not too early to start thinking about next spring’s garden! 🌱

Many native perennial seeds need a period of cold, moist conditions before they’ll germinate. It’s called cold stratification, and fall is a great time to start learning which of the seeds you want to grow will need it.

In Georgia, many wildflowers are sown in late fall and winter as soil temperatures decline. For native seeds that require cold stratification, winter conditions can help provide the natural cold period they need before spring germination.

You can also cold-stratify certain seeds indoors using your refrigerator. Just remember that requirements vary by species, so always check the recommendations for the particular seed you're starting.

Think of October as planning time: decide what you'd like to grow, gather your seeds and find out which ones need a little winter before they're ready for spring. 🌸

I like this angle much better for an October post because it gives people a reason to care about the graphic right now, without suggesting that every native seed needs to be started in October.

Growing possibilities for Troup County!

Troup County Master Gardener Extension Volunteers, along with Laura Mirarchi, enjoyed spending time today with Commissioner Rex Scott, District 3, and County Manager Eric Mosley.

The group toured the grounds and greenhouse at the UGA Extension Office and had a great conversation about the work our Master Gardeners are doing in the community and opportunities to continue growing our educational outreach.

We appreciate Commissioner Scott and County Manager Mosley taking the time to visit, learn more about our program and see the space firsthand. And a big thank you to the MGEVs who joined us today! 🌱

We’re excited about what the future could hold for gardening education in Troup County. 🌿
