In July of 2020 I was asked to be a panelist in a Michigan Department of Health and Human Services stakeholder discussion about the upcoming redesign of Child Protective Services.
After participating in this discussion I was again asked to participate in three work groups and/or steering committees to help with the redesign over the next three years. This included working to decentralize intakes, develop a structured decision making platform for investigations, rewriting the definitions of neglect and abuse, and developing new safety and risk assessments.
This experience led to me helping develop and launch Michigan's second Substance Use Disorder Family Support Program across St. Clair, Sanilac, Lapeer, Tuscola, and Huron Counties. This family preservation program involves overseeing certified alcohol and drug counselors providing in home services to CPS involved families in order to prevent removal of children.
I take pride in my work to reduce stigma and bias from CPS in order to help families stay together. While I feel that the redesign has led to improvements, there is still significant room for growth. Additionally, MDHHS has recently cut nearly 20% of the local funding for Family Preservation programming.
Once elected, I will prioritize the continual assessment of CPS policies and practices in order to continue making the system function as intended, while working to restore funding to these critical programs.
