Halloween Pet Safety: Essential Do's and Don'ts 🎃🐾

Halloween is full of excitement, but constant doorbells, costumes, and visitors can create safety risks for pets. Keep your furry family members safe with these essential guidelines:

DO:
✔️ Keep identification current: Ensure your pet's microchip information is up to date.
✔️ Maintain licensing and tags: Stay current on vaccinations and city licensing, and ensure ID tags are affixed to their collar.
✔️ Secure your dog indoors: Kennel your dog during exciting events like trick-or-treating to guarantee they don't door dash.
✔️ Keep control on walks: If your dog tags along for trick-or-treating, always keep them on a leash.

DON'T:
❌ DON'T let pets hang around doorways when expecting visitors or trick-or-treaters.
❌ DON'T allow overly anxious animals to free roam in the home with guests.
❌ DON'T leave animals tethered or unattended outside.
❌ DON'T feed your pets Halloween candy.

What happens when an animal is abandoned by their owner?

The Liberty Animal Shelter has had nearly a dozen animals dumped at our facility this month ALONE! We can't imagine the number of animals that never made it to a shelter.

When an animal is abandoned, especially by a trusted family member, they are terrified. They are placed into a new environment with absolutely no idea how to survive.

Their first instinct is to run. This makes it extremely difficult for animal care professionals to contain the animals and bring them to safety. While we would like to say every abandoned animal makes it to the shelter, no matter how close they are to the facility, some are never located.

Of the animals that are able to be caught, they take double if not triple the amount of time to decompress and even longer to build trust with humans again (some never do). This requires them to stay in a shelter much longer than necessary, which is an additional stressor, before they are suitable for a new home.

As we all know, Missouri weather is fickle, so abandoned animals are forced to endure all sorts of weather conditions. This exposes animals to illness and injuries that were preventable had they been brought to the shelter through the proper channels.

We understand that pet owners sometimes face extremely difficult decisions when it comes to their pets so stay tuned for part 2 in this series for how we can help you find ways to keep your 4-legged family member or provide a safe transition to a new family.

Are you my mother? The Liberty Animal Shelter needs YOUR help locating the owner of this sweet boy who was found outside the shelter at 8:49am. We are unsure if it was brought to the shelter by a good Samaritan or not but we would love to get him back home with his owner. Do you happen to know where I might live?

Scales, scutes, and slithers! 🦎🐍

Today is National Reptile Awareness Day, and while our shelter focuses on dogs and cats, we think every creature—big, small, furry, or scaly—deserves a happy, healthy life!

Even though you won't find reptiles in our adoption kennels, many local rescues and specialized shelters work tirelessly to rehome snakes, lizards, turtles, and tortoises. Reptiles are often misunderstood, but they make incredible, fascinating pets when given the right home.

Thinking about welcoming a scaly friend into your family? Keep these care essentials in mind:

☀️ Lighting & Heating matter: Reptiles are ectotherms (cold-blooded) and depend entirely on external heat sources to regulate their body temperature. Proper UVB lighting and heat gradients aren't optional—they’re vital to their survival!
🥬 Specific Diets: From gut-loaded insects and leafy greens to fresh water, reptile nutritional needs vary wildly by species.
🏠 Habitat Space: That tiny baby turtle or gecko won't stay small forever! Research their adult size and habitat requirements before bringing one home.
🩺 Exotic Vet Care: Not all vets see reptiles. Ensure you have an exotic veterinarian nearby before adopting.

If you're considering a reptile, we encourage you to look into local exotic animal rescues or adopt through specialized organizations!

Happy Reptile Awareness Day! 🐢✨

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and we want to introduce you to a very special girl looking for her forever home: meet Jan! 🐾

Jan is a stunning 9-month-old Great Pyrenees with a heart as big as her paws. Like many pups her age, she’s full of love, intelligence, and potential—she just needs the right partner to help her shine!

Jan was recently returned to us through no fault of her own, but because her natural herding instincts kicked in. Great Pyrenees are working livestock guardians by nature; they are wired to protect, patrol, and stay alert! Because of this, Jan needs a home with a family who truly understands the Great Pyrenees breed and is ready to give her the purposeful environment, direction, and consistency she thrives on.

About Jan:
🐶 Breed: Great Pyrenees
🎂 Age: 9 months old
❤️ Personality: Sweet, smart, and loyal
🏡 Ideal Home: An experienced home familiar with working/guardian breeds who can give her clear boundaries and plenty of mental and physical outlets!

If you know and love the Great Pyrenees breed—or have the experience to give Jan the structured, loving home she deserves—come meet her today! Help us celebrate Adopt a Shelter Dog Month by giving Jan the fresh start she’s been waiting for.

October is National Pet Wellness Month!

Our pets bring so much joy into our lives every single day-- and keeping them healthy, happy, and thriving is a team effort! Whether you share your heart with a playful puppy, a curious kitten, or a wise senior companion, small preventative steps make a huge difference in their overall quality of life.

Here are 4 key areas to focus on this month:

1. Annual Wellness Exams: even if your pet seems completely healthy, routine check-ups are essential! Regular exams allow your veterinarian to establish a baseline, spot potential issues early, and keep vaccinations up to date.

2. Preventative Care Beyond the Basics: prevention is always better-- and less stressful-- than treatment! Year-round protection against fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal parasites is vital for indoor and outdoor pets alike. Periodontal disease affects a majority of adult pets. Regular brushing, dental chews, and professional cleanings keep teeth and organs healthy.

3. Nutrition and Weight Management: every pet's nutritional requirements vary based on breed, activity level, and health history. Extra pounds put added stress on joints, heart, and metabolic health. A quick check with your vet can help determine their ideal daily caloric intake and target body condition score.

4. Life-Stage Adjustments: a pet's health needs evolve significantly as they grow! For puppies and kittens the focus should be foundational vaccines, social development, spay/neuter, and microchipping for safety. When it comes to adult pets the focus should be weight maintenance, oral health, and consistent physical and mental exercise. As for senior pets, they often benefit from bi-annual check-ups, joint support, gentle low-impact exercises, and environment modifications (like orthopedic beds or pet ramps).

When was your pet's last check-up? Give your local veterinarian a call to schedule their annual exam!
