Our department is very proud of this initiative and can’t thank our community partners enough for their support. If you or someone you know is in need of a free small sharps container please contact our office at 641-844-2799 or at send us an email at [email protected] so we can assist you.

Utilizing dollars from the county's portion of the massive nationwide opioid settlement, Marshall County Public Health installed its first community sharps disposal bin at the east entrance to McFarland Clinic, located at 421 E. Merle Hibbs Blvd., on Friday morning.

"It's been in the works for quite a while now. We were just trying to get the location set up and work with McFarland Clinic to get it in the works," MCPH Director Sydney Grewell said. "We've all been busy with things -- the (Legionella) outbreak last year -- so we're excited to finally get it in place."

Grewell explained that sharps, which can be used for everything from diabetic injections to lovenox and MS injections can pose risks to the general public and especially sanitation workers if not properly disposed of, and she is excited to bring the first dedicated public disposal bin to Marshall County.

We have an exciting announcement!

Marshall County Public Health is proud to announce our community sharps disposal bin will be place today at McFarland Clinic of Marshalltown. This was made possible through the Marshall County Opioid Settlement Funding Grant to increase prevention efforts, support community health, reduce potential safety risks, increase prevention efforts and promote responsible disposal of used needles and other sharps.

McFarland Clinic will serve as the host location for the disposal bin, helping make this resource available to the Marshalltown community. This partnership reflects the importance of collaboration between local public health and healthcare organizations in addressing community needs.

Friday October 23rd only Marshall County Public Health will be on-site to provide free, small sharps containers to community members who need them. Staff will also share information about the disposal bin’s location, availability, and accepted materials. Residents are encouraged to follow posted instructions and never place loose sharps in household trash or recycling.

For more information on the community sharps bin, contact Marshall County Public Health at [email protected] or 641-844-2799.

September is Su***de Prevention Month — a time to remind ourselves that behind every statistic is a person. A parent. A child. A friend. A coworker. A neighbor.

In 2024, 48,824 people in the United States died by su***de. That same year, an estimated 14.3 million adults seriously thought about su***de, 4.6 million made a su***de plan, and 2.2 million attempted su***de. (CDC)

Those numbers are hard to read. But they also remind us why connection matters.

Sometimes people don’t need us to have the right answers.
They need someone to notice.
Someone to ask.
Someone to listen.
Someone to stay.

Don’t be afraid to ask someone, “Are you okay?”

Talking about su***de does not put the idea in someone’s head. An honest, caring conversation can help someone feel less alone and open the door to support. NAMI encourages us this month to break the silence and start those conversations. (NAMI)

💚 Check on your people.
💚 Listen without judgment.
💚 Take changes in behavior seriously.
💚 Remind someone they don’t have to face a difficult time alone.

And if you or someone you know is struggling, help is available.

📞 Call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline — available 24/7.

You never know what someone is carrying behind a smile, a “I’m fine,” or a normal day at work.

Start the conversation. Be the difference. You could be the reason someone chooses to stay. 💚

Head lice can happen to anyone—and having lice does not mean your child is dirty or unhealthy. Lice are also not known to spread disease.

Here are a few things every parent should know:

🔎 Know what to look for:
• Itching or feeling like something is moving in the hair
• Small live bugs close to the scalp
• Nits (eggs) attached to the hair shaft, especially near the scalp

👧 Check your child's hair regularly.
The best way to find lice is to carefully check the hair and scalp, especially around the ears and the back of the neck. A fine-toothed nit comb can help.

Different lice treatments have different instructions, including when to repeat treatment. Always follow the product directions or talk with your healthcare provider.

Most importantly: Don't panic! Head lice are common, treatable, and not a reflection of your child's cleanliness.
