Thank you for helping us on our mission to raise $25000.00!
The "WHY" of the "Slam Dunk" Against Hunger Fundraiser.

Older Iowans are experiencing increasing levels of food insecurity due to inflation and the rising cost of living. Many depend on Elderbridge’s home-delivered meals and congregate meals, as their primary source of daily nutrition.
Demand for these services continues to grow; however, state and federal funding has not kept pace with the need for nutritional assistance among older adults. As a result, Elderbridge faces challenges in meeting demand and minimizing waiting lists.
Funding support for Elderbridge’s congregate and home-delivered meal programs will help expand capacity, reduce waiting lists, and ensure older Iowans have consistent access to nutritious meals that support health, independence, and well-being.

For 23 years, seven retired farmers in a small Nebraska town met for coffee every morning at six. Their table was by the window at the gas station out on the highway, and most mornings they argued about rain. In January the gas station closed for good.

Harold's daughter-in-law runs the county shelter three blocks off Main Street. Over Sunday dinner she mentioned that the old dogs in the last row were alone from five in the evening until she unlocked the door at eight. Most mornings the oldest ones were up and crying by six.

The next morning Harold, who's 81, and the other six men were in her parking lot at a quarter to six with their thermoses.

She let them in and set up a folding table in the lobby. The men wanted the old dogs out there with them, so she brought out four that first day. Deacon, a basset, went straight under the table and lay down across Harold's boots.

Within a week there were 11 old dogs in the lobby every morning. An old border collie leans on whichever man sits closest to the counter. Dale keeps a brush in his coat pocket now and works on a different dog each day. They still argue about rain, and mostly the dogs sleep through it.

The staff say the old dogs eat better on coffee mornings and move easier on the first walk of the day. Anybody who comes in later gets the coffee group's opinion of every dog in the building.

Deacon went home with Harold in March. Harold's wife had said no to another dog for 10 years. Then one morning his truck wouldn't start, and she drove him over and found Deacon asleep across his boots. That settled it.

Besides Harold, two of the men have taken a dog home. One of Dale's neighbors heard about the coffee dogs at church and came for the border collie.

Harold still brings Deacon to coffee at six. Some mornings the snow is too deep and the trucks can't get into town. On those mornings, the shelter manager says, the old dogs lie by the lobby door until somebody comes.

On October 8, 2026, AgState awarded Elderbridge a $1,200 grant, matched by Land O’Lakes for a total of $2,400 to support Elderbridge’s 2027 Slam Dunk Against Hunger Online Auction. The funds will help provide meals for low- to middle-income older adults and adults with disabilities.

Formed in 2021 through the merger of ALCECO/Ag Partners and First Cooperative Association, AgState builds on a cooperative legacy dating back to 1887. Today, it serves Iowa producers with agronomy, grain, feed, energy, and risk-management services.

Land O’Lakes, Inc., one of America’s premier agribusiness and food companies, is a member-owned cooperative with industry-leading operations that span the spectrum from agricultural production to consumer foods. With 2025 annual sales of $16 billion, Land O’Lakes is one of the nation’s largest cooperatives, ranking 262 on the Fortune 500. Building on a legacy of more than 100 years of operation, Land O’Lakes today operates some of the most respected brands in agribusiness and food production, including Land O’Lakes Dairy Foods, Animal Nutrition, and WinField United. The company does business in all 50 states and more than 60 countries. Land O’Lakes, Inc. corporate headquarters are located in Arden Hills, Minnesota.

Together, these contributions will help provide nutritious meals throughout Elderbridge’s 29-county service area. The Administration for Community Living reports that one in two older adults is at risk of malnutrition, highlighting the importance of access to nutritious meals.

Elderbridge’s Board of Directors, staff, and meal recipients sincerely thank AgState and Land O’Lakes for their generosity and commitment to the health, independence, and dignity of older Iowans and adults with disabilities.
