FrogWatch USA™ is a citizen science project hosted by the Akron Zoo where people are able to learn about, and identify, the frog and toad species in their area and then report on the calls they hear in a particular area. Medina County Park District has been a member of the Akron Zoo Chapter for 11 survey seasons. These surveys operate from February to August, at least 30 minutes after sunset. Volunteers identify calling frog and toad species and record the call intensity, as well as the current weather conditions, at least once per month at their designated sites.

Amphibians like frogs and toads are indicators of ecosystem health and are in decline globally. As the climate and land use around our parks change, surveying which species are present in those areas remains as important as ever.

For the 2026 season, over 500 observations were made by 10 volunteers across 39 station sites in 14 of our parks. There were 10 unique species of frogs identified. The parks with the highest amount of observed diversity were Buckeye Woods Park and Green Leaf Park. THANK YOU, VOLUNTEERS! To view a pdf of the distribution of species, visit our website:https://medinacountyparks.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/FrogWatch-2026-End-of-Year-Report.pdf

Does this sound like a program you might be interested in, then plan to join us for a program in January. Registration will open for this on November 1 at medinacountyparks.com:

Saturday, January 23
FrogWatch Workshop
Oenslager Nature Center

Are you interested in learning more about the frogs that call Northeast Ohio home? Do you want to learn about how you can become involved in studying them in your own community? If so, you’re invited to join us for this workshop which will break down the importance of frogs, how to identify them by sight and sound, where they live, and how citizen scientists all over the USA are studying them in their own communities. You can learn more about FrogWatch at https://www.akronzoo.org/frogwatch. Ages ten to adult. Register by January 21. Free.
