A few weeks ago, The Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department held its 4th annual Re-Entry and Outreach Breakfast.

Their mission, as agents of change, is to help our inmate population with technical proficiencies, education, life skills, and the confidence to rejoin their communities, find jobs, and become productive members of society. This is why MDCR works collaboratively with our community partners to provide the inmate population necessary services. During the breakfast, they highlighted successful partnerships, programs and services that benefit our returning citizens. Their main goal is to inform, educate, and collaborate about re-entry progress and prevention of recidivism. In attendance from our team were Yisel Morell, LMHC, Care Coordination Manager and Milieris Leon, Administrative Assistant- FDOC Grant.

At the 17th Annual Scientific Conference of the International Association of Psychiatric Nurses, Derek Moore, Manager of Thriving Mind Peer Services, was honored with the prestigious Community Impact Champion Award. The global organization, known for its commitment to supporting individuals with mental health challenges and elevating leaders who advance community-based care, recognized Moore for his exceptional dedication to expanding mental health and substance use services throughout Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.

Moore’s leadership in strengthening peer support services and championing the implementation of a Recovery-Oriented System of Care (ROSC) in the region stood out as a model for transformative, community-centered behavioral health work. His tireless efforts have helped broaden access, reduce stigma, and elevate the role of lived experience in the continuum of care.

The ceremony also celebrated fellow honorees Vicki Sevilla, Senior Director of Outpatient & Community Health Services at Jackson Behavioral Health Hospital, and The Honorable Judge Steven Leifman, both recognized for their influential contributions to mental health advocacy and system reform.

Together, the award recipients embody the spirit of innovation, compassion, and leadership that the International Association of Psychiatric Nurses seeks to uplift worldwide.
