Estimating your retirement benefits provides a helpful starting point, but it doesn’t capture how your daily life and expenses may evolve. Expenses will shift from year to year. Early retirement might bring more travel, while later years could mean increased healthcare costs. Maintaining a savings buffer helps you create a realistic, confident plan.

How does retirement get funded?

Member contributions: Public employees contribute a fixed percentage of their earnable compensation through mandatory payroll deductions. Contribution rates vary depending on the specific system and membership tier. Example: Tier 1 regular members generally contribute 7.5%, while Tier 2 members contribute 6.0% (ERS) or 6.2% (TRS).

Employer Contributions: State agencies, public schools, and participating local governments make regular contributions on behalf of their employees. These rates are actuarially determined annually to ensure the long-term soundness of the retirement systems’ funds. Learn more here: https://www.rsa-al.gov/employers/trs/ and https://www.rsa-al.gov/employers/ers/.

Investment earnings: The RSA investment staff invests the pooled assets into diverse portfolios, including equities, fixed income, and real estate, which generate significant returns to help pay lifetime benefits.
