Protection of our Children and Youth Diversion Programs:
I will work to build partnerships for youth diversion programs focusing on mentorship for the youth of our county.
Our Office will continue to staff our county schools with School Resource Officers to provide security and mentorship for our children.
I will continue to provide the Drug Abuse Resistance Education, D. A.R.E., in our schools with the goal of providing our children with the tools needed to fight peer pressure and make better choices regarding drugs.
I will also continue to support diversion from the Juvenile Justice system to Teen Court, a program designed to give the juvenile offender a way to reform outside the Juvenile Justice system.
Our Office's Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) unit has been working with the NC State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) for years to protect our children. With advances in technology, this unit has built a more robust digital forensic lab, which has created efficiencies in identifying victims and collecting evidence for use in prosecution. Since 2022 the unit has arrested over 30 child predators resulting in more than 100 felony charges. More importantly, this unit identified and located 7 juvenile victims from our area and referred them to the Child Advocacy Center for any counseling and therapy needs. In 2023, our ICAC unit was recognized by the NCSBI and received the Investigative Excellence Award for their efforts in combating children predators. Also in 2023, the unit obtained a private grant to purchase an Electronic Storage Detection (ESD) K-9. At that time, this K-9 was one of three active ESD K-9's in NC.
As your Sheriff, the protection of our children will continue to be one the highest priorities of the Sheriff's Office.
