🚨 Today is National Move Over Day! 🚨
Whenever you see the flashing lights in your rearview mirror, pull to the right and stop! Whenever you approach emergency vehicles on the side of the road, be sure to slow down and change lanes when safe to do so.
It's not just the law, it saves lives!
The Emergency Responder Safety Institute reported that 16 law enforcement officers, 3 firefighters/EMS personnel, 11 tow truck operators, 3 road service technicians, and 3 DOT/SSP workers were struck by a vehicle and lost their lives last year. That's 36 people who lost their lives in 2025 trying to do their job.

EVER WONDER WHY OUR FIRE TRUCKS ARE YELLOW?

Believe it or not, Township Six Fire Department didn't always have yellow fire trucks!

When our department was established in 1972, our first two trucks were purchased used from the Havelock Volunteer Fire Department for just $100! And yes, they were RED!

During the 1970s, the fire service began rethinking the traditional red fire truck. Research suggested that bright lime-yellow was easier for motorists to notice, particularly during daylight hours and certain low-light conditions.

As departments across the country began making the switch, Township Six adopted yellow for its apparatus.

While many departments eventually returned to red, we stuck with yellow!

More than 50 years later, that unmistakable yellow has become part of who we are.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Durham Fire Department and Firefighter Brokes’s family. Rest easy brother.

We are heartbroken to share that Firefighter Andrew Brokes died in the line of duty this morning while searching for victims inside the building at 410 Marly Drive.

Firefighter Brokes, who joined the Durham Fire Department on May 5, 2025, served the Durham community with dedication, courage, and a deep commitment to the residents of the Bull City.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for our department, the family, and the entire community,” said Durham Fire Chief Robert J. Zoldos II. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and his colleagues, and we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during this unimaginably difficult time. The department is standing with and supporting his family in every possible way.”

Two other firefighters were injured during the incident and were taken to Duke Medical Center. Both have received care and are expected to make full recoveries.

This loss is felt across our entire department. Firefighters step into unpredictable situations every day in service to others, and Firefighter Brokes embodied that calling with honor.

We know our community is grieving alongside us. If you wish to share your condolences or messages of support, they will be received with gratitude by our department and by those who knew and loved Firefighter Brokes.

In the coming days, we will share more information about how we will honor his service and support the firefighters involved in this incident.

Thank you, Durham, for surrounding our DFD family with care during this profoundly difficult time.

đźš’ ENGINE OPS đźš’

Did you know Township Six has a maze prop built by our own firefighters?

Throughout September, our firefighters have been focusing on engine operations and improving our skills in all aspects of engine company work.

Thursday night’s training focused on MAYDAY and Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) operations. Utilizing our maze prop, firefighters were sent into smoke-filled, zero-visibility conditions. During each evolution, a team member would go down, requiring the crew to work together to locate, package, and remove the downed firefighter.

Training like this allows our crews to practice communication, teamwork, and firefighter rescue techniques in challenging conditions.

Township Six Fire Department is committed to staying trained and proficient in all aspects of the job so we can better serve our community and assist our neighboring departments when called upon.

Twenty-five years ago, our nation was forever changed.

Today, we remember the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001, including 343 members of the FDNY, 37 members of the Port Authority Police Department, and 23 members of the NYPD.

We remember the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, dispatchers, military members, and countless civilians who answered the call in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

For many, “Never Forget” is more than a phrase. It is a promise to remember those who were lost, those who ran toward danger, and those whose lives were forever changed.

We will never forget.
