Nature has been inventing for a very long time, and scientists are still taking notes.

At our next Junior Nature Seekers session, kids will explore how plants work and how engineers borrow ideas from nature to solve problems. Think burrs that inspired Velcro and dandelion seeds that work like tiny parachutes. Then we’ll put Texas wintergrass under the microscope and watch its seed unwind as it gets ready to plant itself in the soil.

🌧️ Ever wonder where the rain goes when it falls on Headwaters? And what you can do in your own yard to make the most of every rainfall?

Join us for Catching the Rain: Exploring Natural Stormwater Solutions, a guided walk that follows the water across the Headwaters property!

We'll start at the rain gardens in our parking area, then wind through the savanna to see the bioswales and seasonal pools that slow rainfall down, hold sediment on the land, and return cleaner water toward the Comal Springs River.

🌿 You'll leave with practical ideas you can try in your own yard! Whether you're a home gardener, landscape professional, or just curious about how New Braunfels can make every drop count, this tour is for you.

🌿 Volunteer Highlight: Chrissy and Lila Gossett

This month we’re celebrating a mother-daughter team who bring curiosity and care to the Headwaters every time they visit.

In their words:

“We love volunteering at the Headwaters! It is such an amazingly beautiful and peaceful space. You can’t be there and not feel connected to nature. We also love all of the incredible leaders and volunteers we have met. We always learn something new and fascinating every time we are there, whether it’s related to ecology and water stewardship or the many fascinating historical and cultural findings related to this area.”

Lila serves as a youth volunteer in our educational programs, helping younger learners explore the springs alongside our education team.

“The Headwaters really is a hidden gem, right here in the middle of town, and it’s so fun to be a small part of the amazing things happening there!”

Thank you, Chrissy and Lila. You’re part of a long line of people who have cared for this place.

November’s native tree is one we know well around the Comal: the Bald cypress (*Taxodium distichum*). 🌳

Bald cypress trees love life near the water, which makes them right at home along rivers, creeks, and other wet areas. Their strong root systems help hold soil in place along the water’s edge, while their branches provide habitat for birds and other wildlife.

And late in the year, they put on a show. Unlike most conifers, Bald cypress trees lose their needles each year. Before they do, their soft green foliage turns a beautiful rusty orange and brown.

If you’re walking along the Comal this fall, take a closer look at the Bald cypress. They’re a pretty unmistakable part of the landscape we call home.

Thank you to everyone who made the archaeology exhibit at the Headwaters possible.

🔹 Dr. Judith Dykes-Hoffmann, Texas Lutheran University, Director of Foundation and Government Relations, and NBU Board Vice President
🔹 Mindy Bonine, Texas Historical Commission, Archeological Project Reviewer
🔹 Mason Miller, Environmental Research Group, VP of Innovation and Technology
🔹 Dr. Todd Ahlman, Director, Center for Archaeological Studies, Texas State University
🔹 Rick Reed, Comal County Historical Commission
🔹 Bobbie Garza-Hernandez, Indigenous Cultures Institute
🔹 Iliana Gonzales, Comal ISD, Secondary Social Studies Curriculum Coordinator
🔹 Linda Dreibrodt, New Braunfels ISD, Social Studies Curriculum Specialist

Thank you to the donors who funded this work:

🔹 Kronkosky Charitable Foundation
🔹 Humanities Texas
🔹 Still Water Foundation
🔹 Summerlee Foundation
🔹 Downtown Rotary Club of New Braunfels

And thank you to New Braunfels Utilities and CEO Ryan Kelso for his remarks at the opening.

The exhibit is open Wednesday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. Get your tickets before you visit: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/headwaters/733635

♻️ Ever wonder what happens after you toss something into the recycling bin?

Join us for Recycling 101 and follow the journey of your recyclables from the curb to their next life as a new product.

Together with WM (formerly Waste Management) and the New Braunfels Solid Waste Department, we’ll explore what can and can’t be recycled in our area, bust some common recycling myths, and discover what happens to the materials we put in the bin.

You’ll leave with practical tips and the knowledge to help your family, friends, and co-workers better differentiate between recyclable and non-recyclable items.

It’s also a great way to get ready for Texas Recycles Day in November and become a recycling champion in our community.

We’re excited to announce that Headwaters at the Comal is officially a Monarch Joint Venture partner! 🦋

Monarch Joint Venture is a national network of organizations working together to conserve monarch butterflies and their remarkable migration.

Here at Headwaters, we’re supporting this mission through native habitat restoration, collecting native milkweed seeds, and planting diverse nectar-producing species that sustain monarchs and other pollinators.

Through this partnership, we’ll connect with monarch conservation experts and fellow partners to exchange knowledge, strengthen habitat restoration practices, and expand educational opportunities for our community.

We’re proud to be part of a nationwide effort to protect monarchs, one habitat at a time.
