A 24-year-old Coast Guard rescue swimmer is being hailed as a hero after saving 16 people from a sinking boat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Josh Law was lowered from a helicopter into total darkness and waves up to 8 feet, 140 miles off the coast of Mexico. For two hours he was the only person in the water, pulling survivors to a rescue basket one by one.

On the flight to San Diego, Law treated the wounded, including injuries consistent with shark bites. Eleven people from the boat were never found, and the Coast Guard called off its search on Sunday.

In his first interview since the rescue, Law called it the longest rescue of his career and shrugged off the praise, saying what he endured was nothing compared with what the survivors went through.

Ohio just recorded its second-deadliest year for domestic violence in more than a decade. A new report from the Ohio Domestic Violence Network counted 134 domestic violence related deaths across the state between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026, the second-highest total in the 11 years the organization has tracked these cases. That figure was down from 157 deaths the previous year, but advocates say the numbers remain alarmingly high.

One of the starkest findings: 49% of victims were trying to leave or had already left the relationship when they were killed. Lisa DeGeeter, the network's senior director of policy and prevention, said that share is "nearly double what it was two years ago." Children were pulled into the violence as well. The report found 53 children witnessed a parent's murder during the reporting period, a 47% increase from the year before, and five children were killed by a parent or stepparent.

According to Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey on October 13, 2026, at 11:14 AM Deputies from the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office and Scioto Township EMS were dispatched to 7809 High Street Unit #3 Orient, Ohio on a one-year-old female not breathing.

Scioto Township EMS arrived on scene first, started CPR and immediately transported the female child to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Deputies then arrived on scene and made contact with the female child’s mother, 30-year-old Brittany M. Stroud who was on scene. A Detective arrived on scene as well. We then learned the female child was 17 months old.

At 11:56 AM the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office received notice that the one-year-old child was pronounced deceased at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Detectives learned while working with Franklin County Children Services and National Youth Advocate Program that due to a court order out of Franklin County the 17-month-old child was supposed to be in the custody of 52-year-old Tammy M. Stroud. Also, due to the court order Brittany Stroud is not to have unsupervised visitation with the 17-month-old child. Tammy Stroud is the mother of Brittany Stroud.

On October 14, 2026, an autopsy was performed at the Franklin County Coroner’s Office on the 17-month-old child. During the autopsy it was discovered that the 17-month-old child had a fatal amount of Fentanyl in her system.

After the autopsy Detectives from the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at the residence where this incident occurred, 7809 High Street Unit #3 Orient, Ohio. Evidence was seized from the residence.

A handful of other search warrants have been executed on this case. Detectives have been working with the Columbus Police Department concerning this investigation.

On October 16, 2026, Detective Sgt Robert Dauberman filed charges on this matter on Brittany Stroud for Involuntary Manslaughter a Felony of the First Degree, Child Endangerment a Felony of the Third Degree, and Possession of a Controlled Substance a Felony of the Fifth Degree. Charges were also filed on Tammy Stroud for Complicity to Involuntary Manslaughter a Felony of the First Degree, Complicity to Child Endangerment a Felony of the Third Degree, and Complicity to Possession of a Controlled Substance a Felony of the Fifth Degree. Arrest Warrants were issued for both Brittany and Tammy Stroud.

In the evening of October 18, 2026, Tammy Stroud turned herself in to the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office on the Arrest Warrant. Tammy Stroud was arraigned in the Circleville Municipal Court on October 19, 2026, and was given a $250,000.00 Bond.

Brittany Stroud’s Arrest Warrant is still outstanding. If anyone has any information concerning her whereabouts, please contact Sgt. Robert Dauberman at 740.420.5752 or [email protected]. Brittany Stroud is known to frequent the Franklin County/Columbus area.

Not sure what happened to the last one so we’ll do it again:) We trained with a fantastic group of teachers and staff over at Oakstone Academy yesterday. They are a group of motivated lifesavers and obviously have a deep protective attitude towards their students and fellow staff.
Absolutely sponging up the info. So thank you to Oakstone and of course our instructors who nailed it again.:)
