On Monday this adorable beagle girl, who we have named Caramel Apple, was brought in as a stray. She was not claimed. Unfortunately during some routine veterinary care, it was found that she was positive for both heartworm and Lyme disease. Heartworm is just what it sounds like. They are worms that live in the heart and surrounding blood vessels. It is spread by mosquitos. They are deadly to dogs if not treated. The treatment is expensive and physically hard on the dog. You can prevent heartworm easily with a chewable tablet once a month from your vet.
Caramel Apple is very lucky. Licking County Humane Society has offered to pull her from us and do the treatment. She gets a second chance because of them. She has a long road ahead. Treatment for heartworms can take anywhere from 3-6 months (sometimes more), but this sweet girl is worth it. ❤️
If anyone would like to donate to Licking HS to assist with Caramel Apple's veterinary care, please visit their website. 🥰
