Greetings from Brooklyn Urban Garden Charter School (BUGS). Here at Brooklyn Urban Garden Charter School, we believe in a strong commitment toward an inclusive & challenging education, a community family-like atmosphere, and a strong, rigorous academic curriculum. We are:
•Located in Windsor Terrace near Prospect Park and Green-Wood Cemetery, in a safe and welcoming neighborhood (District 15).

•A caring, family-oriented, diverse community dedicated to providing an inclusive, hands-on, interdisciplinary education to young adolescents of all abilities and backgrounds, with a focus on real-world problem solving and the exploration of science-based sustainability. Our school is small and inviting, where every teacher knows your name and supports your academic and personal growth.

•Providing High School admissions support for students & parents that has placed students in top NYC schools such as Bard, Brooklyn Latin, Brooklyn Tech, Harvest Collegiate, iSchool, LaGuardia, Millennium, Murrow, Stuyvesant and many others.

Get Ready for something spooktacular! Monster Mash is next Friday, October 30 from 3:00–4:30 pm in the cafeteria. There will be dancing, costume contests, pizza, candy bags, prizes and more!

This will be a Dress-Down Day and students are welcome to wear costumes!
🎃 Students with or without a costume are welcome to attend Monster Mash.
🎃 Student COSTUMES MAY NOT have any weapons (real or fake).
🎃 Students may not wear masks that cover their whole face.
🎃 Students can wear makeup.

🌿BUGS 6th Grade Field Study Spotlight: Brooklyn Botanic Garden

6th graders took their learning beyond the classroom to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden to investigate a big question: What can humans do to support ecosystems?

During the full-day exploration, students conducted animal observations, identified plant species, and practiced sketching and measuring. They also explored which parts of the garden were created by humans versus those that occurred naturally, examining the impact of human-designed spaces on local wildlife.

Way to go, 6th-grade sustainability designers! 🔍🌱

📰 BUGS 8th grade writing students are deep into their Investigative Journalism unit, exploring self-selected topics and synthesizing primary and secondary sources to write third-person objective articles that illuminate the truth.

A big shoutout to Mr. Elliott and Ms. Chou for two impactful classes featuring stellar guest journalists — NY Times reporter Emily Hagar and Arthur Browne, winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in Editorial Writing and former Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of the NY Daily News — to guide our students and share their real-world experiences, insights, and advice.

Key takeaways shared with our young reporters include always seeking accuracy, checking sources, removing bias, committing to reading and rewriting, and remembering that journalism is public trust—it is your duty to inform people about what matters to them and to do it right.

🌿 BUGS 7th graders Friday Field Study at Marine Park Salt Marsh provided an unforgettable opportunity to explore the rich ecological history of NYC’s salt marsh shorelines and the diverse marine organisms that call our waterways home!

As part of our Educating for Sustainability program and this year's 7th-grade theme focused on the ecology and health of NYC's watershed, students investigated ecosystem health through organism observations and water quality testing. 💧🦀

The BUGS community came together on Wednesday, October 21, for our Breast Cancer Awareness Walk! Students, staff, and families showed their support for those affected by breast cancer while honoring survivors, fighters, and loved ones.

Wearing pink ribbons and walking together, we demonstrated the power of community, compassion, and awareness. 💗

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this event meaningful. Together, we walked for hope, strength, and a future without breast cancer!

At BUGS, we make art and creative thinking an essential component of our Educating for Sustainability approach! In 7th-grade Sustainable Design class, students created "Sense of Place Watercolor Maps"—painting NYC waterways that hold personal meaning to spark creativity and reimagine our connection to the environment. 🎨🌊
