NYC small businesses and entrepreneurs are getting a major boost.

The NYC Comptroller’s Office and the Hebrew Free Loan Society have launched an $8 million initiative offering 0% interest loans of up to $60,000 for eligible businesses across all five boroughs. Access to affordable capital is essential for businesses to grow but too often, financing remains out of reach for many entrepreneurs.

This initiative will prioritize businesses located in neighborhoods with high storefront vacancy rates and historically marginalized communities.

Applications are now open! For eligibility details and how to apply. https://comptroller.nyc.gov/services/for-businesses/zero-interest-loans/

This International Nurses Day, we’re celebrating the HFLS borrowers who are nurses — and those studying to become nurses — who dedicate their lives to caring for others, improving health outcomes, preventing disease, and responding to emergencies across NYC. 💙

At a time of growing need for nurses in the healthcare field, the cost of tuition may discourage students from pursuing this degree. With support from an HFLS interest-free loan however, students can overcome financial challenges and continue their journey toward a rewarding career in healthcare.

Please join us in thanking nurses for their unwavering dedication, compassion, and resilience.

As anti-LGBTQ laws spread, these Jewish nonprofits are funding moves to safer states - Jewish Telegraphic Agency 05/11/2026

“I remember when we got the confirmation email, like we both just sat and cried and hugged each other,” James said. “It was just so difficult to move across the country, and it would not have been possible without the interest-free Move to Thrive Loan from HFLS and Keshet."

Since HFLS and Keshet launched Move to Thrive, an interest-free loan program to support LGBTQ+ people moving for their safety, we’ve received over 400 inquiries and disbursed $274,500 in 0%-interest loans. A big thank you to JTA News and Grace Gilson for the coverage.

HFLS's outreach team is here at the Home Care Association of New York State (HCANYS) conference meeting with member agencies that employ low- and moderate-income health care professionals, the workers who make it possible for so many New Yorkers to care for aging parents and loved ones.

Over the past year, HFLS has distributed significant financial assistance to home health aides and other lower-income professionals, helping them manage unexpected expenses before they become full-blown financial crises.

These essential workers care for our loved ones every day. We’re proud to support them with access to safe, affordable interest-free loans that help them create stability, dignity, and opportunity in their own lives.

Yesterday, HFLS proudly took our partners, donors, board, and committee members out on the road for an HFLS Small Business Site Visit Tour through Washington Heights and Harlem!

We had the chance to step inside four incredible small businesses powered by HFLS interest-free loans, plus a fifth encounter with Al, founder of Outerthere who quite literally drove the experience forward in his tour van.

Along the way, we visited the businesses shaping their communities every day:

Studio In The Heights
Nunu’s Ethiopian Goods
Winnie Said
Harlem Seafood Soul

From neighborhood staples to destination businesses, this tour was a powerful reminder that when small businesses thrive, communities grow stronger.

Thank you to everyone who joined us—we loved sharing this experience with you.
