🌿 There was lots happening at Lawton Farm last week!

Students from Brown University’s Herbarium visited the property to explore its plant life and ecology, bringing another wonderful opportunity for learning and research to this special conserved landscape.

We also welcomed Plant to Paper artists who harvested mugwort—an invasive plant found on the property—and transformed it into handmade paper. What a creative way to combine art and conservation: removing an invasive species while turning it into something beautiful and useful!

Lawton Farm continues to be a place where conservation, education, science, and creativity come together. We love seeing our protected lands used for learning, discovery, and new ideas. 🌱🍂

🍂 Sometimes the best thing you can do for nature is…leave it alone.

When trees or branches come down on your property, consider leaving some of that woody debris in place—especially along woodland edges or in areas you don’t need to mow or maintain.

Fallen logs, branches, brush, and leaves are an important part of a healthy Rhode Island landscape. As they slowly decompose, they:

🌳 Return nutrients and organic matter to the soil
🐛 Provide habitat for insects and other small creatures
🐦 Create feeding and shelter areas for birds and wildlife
🍄 Support fungi and the many organisms that help build healthy soil
💧 Hold moisture and help protect soil from erosion
🌱 Create places where seeds and young plants can get established

Even a small brush pile or a few logs tucked into a corner of your yard can provide valuable habitat.

Of course, remove downed material where it creates a safety or fire concern—but where you can, leave a little mess for nature. What looks untidy to us can be a thriving little ecosystem.

Join us for Plant to Paper, a unique two-day workshop exploring ecological stewardship through art. We’ll start with a plant walk and harvesting at Lawton Farm on Friday, October 2, then turn those plants into handmade paper on Saturday!

🍃 Day 1 is open to the public — come learn, explore, and see our local landscape in a whole new way. Day 2 has just 15 spots available, so RSVP soon!

Thanks to the Northern Rhode Island Conservation District and all the partners making this creative collaboration possible. 🌱📄

🌿 Planning a garden—or thinking about what to plant next?

Choosing the right plants for your yard can do more than make it beautiful. Native and climate-smart plants can help support birds, bees, butterflies and other wildlife while creating landscapes that are better adapted to our changing climate.

This Climate-Smart Native Plant Selection Tool that can help home gardeners make informed choices. Select Rhode Island, then narrow your search based on your site and the plant characteristics you’re looking for. It’s a handy resource whether you’re planting a whole new garden, replacing a shrub, adding a few perennials, or just wondering what might thrive in that tricky spot in your yard.

Small choices in our own yards can add up to healthier, more connected habitat throughout our community. 🌱🐝🦋

Plant local. Plant for wildlife. Plant for the future.
