๐๐ SCHOOL BUS SAFETY WEEK | OCTOBER 19โ23 ๐๐
๐ The Oak Hill Police Department reminds everyone that school bus safety is everyoneโs responsibility! As we recognize School Bus Safety Week, letโs work together to keep our students safe as they travel to and from school.
๐ข Here are some important school bus safety tips:
๐ For Drivers:
๐น Stop for school buses! When a school bus displays flashing red lights and extends its stop arm, stop and remain stopped as required by Ohio law.
๐น Never pass a stopped school bus while children are boarding or getting off.
๐น Slow down and watch for children near schools, bus stops, and residential areas.
๐น Be alert for flashing yellow lights, which indicate that the bus is preparing to stop.
๐น Never drive distracted. Put your phone away and keep your eyes on the road.
๐น Watch for children crossing the street in front of or behind a school bus.
๐ For Students:
๐น Arrive at the bus stop early and wait in a safe place away from the roadway.
๐น Stand at least 10 feet away from the bus until the driver signals that it is safe to approach.
๐น Use the handrails when getting on or off the bus.
๐น If you must cross the road, cross at least 10 feet in front of the bus, make eye contact with the driver, and look both ways before crossing.
๐น Never run toward or after a moving bus.
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ For Parents:
๐น Remind children to stay away from the road while waiting for the bus.
๐น Make sure children know their bus stop and understand how to cross the street safely.
๐น Teach children to stay out of the driverโs blind spots and never retrieve dropped items near or underneath the bus without alerting the driver.
๐ Remember: A few extra seconds can save a life! Our children depend on all of us to make safe decisions behind the wheel.
Letโs make this a safe and successful school year for every student riding an Oak Hill Local Union School bus!
