Screens and the Brain

Over time research has shown that screen time has many effects on the children and teens brains. Too much and poor quality screen time has been linked to the following:

*Inadequate sleep schedules and insufficient sleep
*Behavior problems
*Delays in language and social skills development
*Violence
*Obesity
*Shorter attention spans
*Less time learning
*Decreased problem solving skills
*Addictive withdrawal behaviors- like anger, anxiety, depression,
*The inability to discern between reality and fantasy.

Like with any healthy habit, it is important to set goals and boundaries for you and your children and teens. Here are some things to consider when setting these goals and boundaries: When are tech free times of day?

Consider making the following zones tech free: Meal times are a great time to connect as a family and practice conversation skills. Turn off screens one hour before bed and sleep screen free to help your brain's natural sleep chemistry regulate for better and deeper sleep. Make car rides a time for conversation and observation. Make it a goal to spend time outside each day to help regulate your nervous system before engaging in screen activities. Pay attention to your own screen habits and how your children see you interacting with technology.

September 21st is the International Day of Peace or “Peace Day ''. Everyone around the world celebrates peace together on that day. At our school assembly on Friday we talked about "Pinwheels for Peace", which is a project that started as a way for students to express their feelings about how to bring peace to the world and our school community. These 4th graders were awesome assembly leaders!

This year we're going to be rolling out some food drives where you can find us in person and drop off food you've purchased directly to us! We're really excited to partner up with some local businesses for this endeavor.

Our first stop is Shirley's Kitchen in downtown pembroke! Shirley's is well known for their delicious breakfast options, and so staying with that theme we would love to see lots of breakfast donations! We're thinking of things like muffin mix, individual cereal cups, individual bags of pre-made muffins, pancake mix or syrup, or small cartons of shelf stable milk and juice.

These are just ideas, we will put whatever you purchase for us to good use, breakfast items or not! You can also check out our Amazon wishlist in our bio for ideas!

Headphone Check!

Most grades had a pair of wired headphones on their supply list. Students use wired headphones at different times of year for benchmark assessments, research on websites with audio support and other learning activities. If you did not send a pair in for your child now is a great time to put their name on a pair they are comfortable wearing. They can be headband style or earbuds as long as they are wired to plug into the chromebook. Most students prefer the fit and feel of a pair they helped select.

Exciting news! This fall, Pembroke Hill School will offer Let Me Run, a unique and empowering program for our 4th grade boys. Let Me Run uses the power of running to teach life skills, foster personal development, and create a sense of community. The program will meet twice a week for 7 weeks and is designed to keep your boys active while inspiring them to develop resilience, confidence, and a sense of accomplishment.

The Pembroke Hill School Let Me Run Team is open to 4th grade boys and meets Mondays and Wednesdays, beginning on Monday September 19th. The season ends with a celebratory 5k race on Saturday, November 14th in Concord.
