We've been paying close attention to the crop harvest reports, and across the state harvest is continuing to progress!

The latest updates from the USDA's Crop Harvest Reports are:

• Corn: 44% Complete
• Soybeans: 89% Complete
• Sunflowers: 45% Complete

This is key for pheasant hunters, as the crops disappear, so do all their extra hiding places! This means targeting those quality grassland areas while hunting can be highly successful tactic!

There are plenty of areas to target too - we have 1,306,240 acres of public hunting opportunity within the primary pheasant range. Some of the highest percentage areas to focus on include Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program lands, Walk-In Areas, Game Production Areas, and Waterfowl Production Areas.

The start of the pheasant season has been great, and hunting conditions are continuing to improve!

South Dakota Conservation Officers often receive assist calls from outside agencies for a variety of different activities. Occasionally, these assist calls result in a game and fish violation.

On October 13, Conservation Officers in Union County received a call from State Trooper Oswaldo Gonzalez about a possible over-limit of waterfowl on a vehicle he stopped for speeding. Conservation Officers arrived on scene and discovered the driver had a total of 70 ducks. Additionally, only three of the ducks met transportation requirements. The ducks were seized, and the driver was issued a citation for 52 ducks over possession limit.

GFP extends a thank you to State Trooper Oswaldo Gonzalez for his instincts that led him to pick up the phone, and call Conservation Officers when something didn’t feel right. GFP also thanks the Union County Sheriff’s Office and the North Sioux City Police Department for their assistance.

Any time you hunt, please be mindful that Walk-In Areas, CHAPs, and private lands are working farms and ranches! You can show gratitude and respect for everyone in a few simple ways:

• Avoid parking on approaches that block access to pastures and fields that farmers and ranchers need to get to.
• If you open a gate, close the gate behind you.
• Pick up any trash you see, whether it is yours or not.

Be respectful, stay safe, and make new memories!

Of course you can camp in many South Dakota state parks. But did you know you can also stay like this?

More than 10 state parks across the state offer modern lodging, with options ranging from suites and cabins to homey group lodges.

Full kitchens, indoor and outdoor gathering spaces, and scenic views are just a few of the many reasons people love these rentals.

Plan a hunting trip with the crew. Treat the family to a local getaway. Take the girls' weekend out of the group chat. Or just a escape and be surrounded by nature.
