Westside Legends will unveil the permanent mural “Pride of the Westside” at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, November 11, at Durant Park, 30 John Street in Pittsfield. Designed by artist N. Carlos Jefferson, the mural depicts members of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, including its chaplain, the Rev. Samuel Harrison. Harrison later became the first pastor of Second Congregational Church, Berkshire County’s first Black church. The 54th included 81 men from Berkshire County, 14 of them from Pittsfield, and saw significant action at Fort Wagner, a battle depicted in the film “Glory.”

Holding the unveiling on November 11, Veterans Day, allows us to honor the past while recognizing today’s veterans.

Westside Legends, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to improving quality of life across the community, city, and county through education, local events, and fundraising. Learn more at www.westsidelegends.org.
