Two signs on one Plymouth building, and of course I needed the story! 💛 “Pemigewasset Hose Company No. 1” stretches across the front, while “Pemi Youth Center” welcomes visitors below. Together, they tell a lovely story about a place that has continued finding ways to serve its community. Plymouth Fire & Rescue’s history identifies this Main Street location as the home of the Pemigewasset Hose Company No. 1 during the 1800s. It belonged to an earlier chapter of local firefighting, when separate companies helped protect the town. Knowing that gives the broad entrance and old company sign a little extra meaning. This was a place connected to neighbors showing up when their community needed them.
Today, that tradition of caring takes a different form. The Pemi Youth Center was founded in the fall of 1999 by Glenda Toomey to give local young people a nurturing place to gather outside school. At 111 Main Street, its mission continues through an Empowerment Program serving students in grades K–12 at low-to-no cost to families, with an emphasis on belonging, confidence, and community. As a mother, I appreciate how much a welcoming space can matter. Having somewhere to feel included, encouraged, and supported can make a real difference in a child’s day. That is meaningful work, and it deserves recognition alongside the building’s history.
I love the character here: pale clapboards, dark green trim, a steep roof, and that wonderful old hose company sign preserved above the entrance. Keeping those words visible lets the building carry its past while making room for the children shaping Plymouth’s future. My curiosity brought me to the history, but learning what happens here today made me appreciate this little stop even more. ❤️
