Let's explore the Grand
E.W. Marland moved to Ponca City in 1908 and built an oil empire. It's estimated he owned one-tenth of the world's oil reserves before leaving the oil industry to become first a U.S. Congressman, then the 10th governor of Oklahoma. Marland's Grand Home, located at 1000 East Grand Avenue in Ponca City, Oklahoma, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was the first mansion-style home of Ernest Whitworth Marland and his family. Designed by Solomon Layton, construction of the home began in 1914 and was completed in 1916 at a cost of approximately $350,000 and featured technology many had never seen, including a central vacuuming system and an automatic dishwasher. Designed in Renaissance Revival style, it covers 16,500 square feet and houses the first indoor swimming pool built in Oklahoma.

The comptometer was the first commercially successful key-driven mechanical calculator, patented in the United States by Dorr Felt in 1887.
A key-driven calculator is extremely fast because each key adds or subtracts its value to the accumulator as soon as it is pressed and a skilled operator can enter all of the digits of a number simultaneously, using as any fingers as required, making them sometimes faster to use than electronic calculators.
Consequently, in specialized applications, comptometers remained in use in limited numbers into the early 1990s, but with the exception of museum pieces, they have all now been superseded by electronic calculators and computers.
This version of a comptometer is an electro-mechanical model.

Artist Call!! 📣

We are excited to announce a collaboration with the Marland Grand Home for a winter exhibition - "Winter at Marland Grand Home: Painted Foxes." This exhibition will be held at the Marland Grand Home on December 4th from 6-8pm. We are looking for 15 artists to create fox-themed artwork on 8x10" canvases for this exhibition. All artists retain the money from their sales at this event, and canvases are provided. Canvases will be available for pick up at the Marland Grand Home between 10-5 next Tuesday-Saturday (9/22-26) with a due date of November 20. Contact [email protected] for any questions.
