There’s a lot going on in today’s post, but it’s worth the time it takes you to flip through these images!
First up, some shelfies taken here at the Book Garden on Gannon-Little Free Library #134292, located on Gannon Drive near Preston. Visits to Little Free Libraries! A recent trip to Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania had us searching out Little Free Libraries on the Little Free Library’s world map, as well as finding LFL’s not on the map, or libraries not registered with the Little Free Library organization. We found some while hitting the trails at two Pennsylvania State Parks, Beltzville State Park and Hickory Run State Park, and we found them on the streets of Jim Thorpe, exchanging some of our inventory with theirs. And speaking of Jim Thorpe…
Jim Thorpe is home to the most beautiful (in our humble opinion) brick-and-mortar library we have ever had the pleasure to visit! The Dimmick Memorial Library is located on Broadway in Jim Thorpe, a town which until 1954 was known as Mauch Chunk. (Pronounced, as best we could decipher, as “monk chow.”) The name change was part of an agreement to inter Thorpe’s remains in the town with a memorial befitting his legacy. The Dimmick Memorial Library has served the community since October of 1890. It barely survived a fire in 1979, but fortunately it did and it was rebuilt and restored, maintaining its unique architectural features. The staff was extremely friendly the day we visited, and we were overwhelmed by the building’s beauty. To help do our part, books were purchased from the library’s book sale shelf, so some pieces of historic Mauch Chunk/Jim Thorpe are now housed here at the Book Garden on Gannon.
