🎉 Congratulations to PNNL intern Akshath Sai Motkuri, who was recently selected as a Washington State Junior Academy of Science (WAJAS) fellow.

Motkuri is one of 11 high school students recognized by the Washington Academy of Sciences for their original scientific research. His project focused on an interdisciplinary, human-centered platform designed to advance research, development, and innovation in global health inequity. Motkuri is a junior at Richland High School.

As an intern last summer, Motkuri worked with PNNL mentors Carolyn and Nick Cramer on vision-based well plate placement verification for ARCADIA under the Center for Robotics and Autonomy.

This week, we celebrated the start of construction for the Microbial Molecular Phenotyping Capability (M2PC), which will be the world’s largest and most fully autonomous biosciences laboratories, and the first that will be available to the broader scientific community.

The 30,800-square-foot research facility is an expansion of the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory - EMSL, a U.S. Department of Energy national scientific user facility at PNNL. M2PC will serve as a flagship component of DOE’s Genesis Mission—designed to modernize and accelerate American science through autonomous, Super-Intelligence-driven laboratories.

Court Corley, a distinguished PNNL scientist, has been selected to serve as interim technical director for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Genesis Mission.

He was appointed to the position in recognition of his contributions to the Genesis Mission and his leadership in Super Intelligence (SI) and computing.

During this six-month assignment, Corley will work with DOE, the National Nuclear Security Administration, and the national laboratory system to support efforts to build the partnerships and platforms that will accelerate breakthroughs in discovery science, applied energy, and national security through SI.

Today we broke ground on Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory - EMSL’s Microbial Molecular Phenotyping Capability (M2PC), a 30,800-square-foot expansion of the user facility.

Through automation, M2PC will transform how researchers identify, grow, and optimize microbial investigations, decreasing experimental timeframes from years to months or weeks.

👏 Congratulations to Eric Smith, a PNNL Laboratory Fellow and program manager, who was recently inducted into Oregon State University (OSU)’s Academy of Distinguished Engineers.

The award is presented by OSU’s College of Engineering to alumni who have made sustained, distinguished contributions to the engineering profession, field, the university, and society at large.

Since 2018, Smith has managed PNNL’s portfolio for the National Nuclear Security Administration Office of Defense Programs and stockpile-related scope in the NNSA Office of Environment, Safety, and Health. Smith’s work has had far-reaching impacts on national and international nuclear security, including leadership roles in tritium production and science for the stockpile and technical support for the packaging and transportation of nuclear materials.

Staff from across PNNL volunteered more than 40 hours during this year’s Benton Franklin Fair & Rodeo.

🐘 👂 They manned a booth for elephant ears, trading their regular work roles for preparing, frying, sugaring, and selling the treats. Proceeds pay for scholarships for Tri-Cities students and support nonprofit organizations across the region.
