Happy Halloween!

A few reminders for drivers:

- Slow down: Drive below posted limits in neighborhoods, especially from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
- Spot hazards: Watch for children darting from between parked cars, driveways and corners.
- Survey surroundings: Use extreme caution when backing out of driveways or turning into alleys.
- Stay focused and plan ahead: Always designate a sober driver, use a rideshare or stay put if drinking. Never drive impaired or distracted.

A few reminders for parents and kids:

- Walk and cross safely: Use crosswalks and intersections. Walk on sidewalks or face traffic if no sidewalk exists.
- Stay visible: Bring flashlights, wear reflective elements and use face paint instead of vision-blocking masks.
- Stay together: Supervise children under 12 and put away devices while walking.

Staying alert and eliminating distractions – whether driving or walking – keeps neighborhood streets safe for trick-or-treaters across our communities.

⚠️⚠️⚠️ ⚠️⚠️⚠️

The Olmsted County Sheriff's Office is aware of another wave of scam calls impersonating local law enforcement. Like previous scams, the scammer pretends to be someone from the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office and eventually requests money, gift cards, or Bitcoin for various reasons.

This post is a reminder never to pay, agree to pay, or make arrangements to meet with anyone in person to make a payment to avoid arrest or pay fees for missing jury duty/court, to satisfy a warrant, or to pay other citations/fees. We encourage you to hang up on any suspicious calls and contact us directly if you have questions. Scammers will also tell the person they cannot hang up the phone, or it will be considered contempt of court.

The Sheriff's Office will never call you to request gift cards or Bitcoin for payment. We will never ask you to wire us money or send us a prepaid debit card. Please feel free to contact us if you get a call like this and have questions.

Please remind family and friends.

Olmsted County Sheriff Kevin Torgerson of Olmsted County announced the commencement of the Law Enforcement Scholarship Program for 2026. Sheriff Torgerson proudly announced that the MSA Board of Directors has established a scholarship fund for the awarding of up to 18 - $2,000 scholarships for this year. These scholarships are due to the coordinated efforts of the 87 elected Sheriffs of the State of Minnesota.

The MSA gives special recognition to the financial needs of students attending the Peace Officer Skills course or one of the two- or four-year law enforcement degree programs around the state. “The MSA Board of Directors acknowledges the current challenges in recruiting and greatly appreciates the individuals who decide to serve others through a career in law enforcement. This is one way that we can support that honorable decision,” said Deputy Director Brian Johnson. The MSA recognizes the importance of pre-entry training for people considering law enforcement as their career choice. The MSA also acknowledges that some students may need outside help in meeting the costs of such training, even though they excel academically.

The MSA Scholarship Committee, in making its selection of awards, intends to achieve representation from all geographical areas of the state. The scholarship deadline is November 30th, 2026.
Awards will be announced on the MSA web page and on social media at the start of 2027. Application forms are available here and must be returned to [email protected] by no later than Friday, November 6, 2026, at 4 p.m.

Scholarships are only available to students currently enrolled in one of the following three categories:

1. Mandated POST Skills Program
2. In their second year of a two-year law enforcement program.
3. In their third or fourth year of a four-year college criminal justice program.

To qualify, students must have completed at least one year of the two-year program or two years of a four-year program. Students meeting these criteria are invited to obtain a scholarship application form from their local sheriff’s office or online at www.mnsheriffs.org.
