Chemistry Olympiad is an international series of competitions sponsored by the American Chemical Society for 9th – 12th graders. This series of competitions begins with a local exam held at Haas Fayetteville around March 1st. Two scholars from each Haas campus progress to the National exam which is held at the U of A. The final competition involves a prestigious study camp and international competition.

Ideal competitors will have already completed AP Chemistry, BUT the exam may be taken each year so the best competitors take the exam multiple years.

Haas Hall Fayetteville has compiled study materials and will hold weekly study sessions beginning Tomorrow, Tuesday 10/27 at lunch in 104 STAR. Please see the following websites for more information:

Scholars from Rogers and other campuses, please contact [email protected] for more details and study materials.

Scholars are invited to celebrate their favorite literary characters by wearing a costume to school on October 30! All costumes and character representations must be PG and school-appropriate.

To participate, scholars must submit the costume approval form and upload a photo of their proposed costume by October 28 (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScQ2HMvbabgBF2HtohP_RHFnAjFtiKXu1uQBpsitl-zkguOtA/viewform?usp=dialog).

All costumes must be approved in advance. Costumes must comply with school dress code expectations. Revealing, offensive, graphic, or overly violent costumes will not be permitted. Scholars whose costumes are not approved must select an alternative and receive approval before wearing it.

We will hold a costume contest for each grade, with prizes awarded to the winners! Scholars may enter individually or as a group. Each participating scholar must have an approved costume. We will finish the day with a costume parade! We look forward to celebrating reading and seeing our scholars’ creativity!

Through the University of Arkansas’s Celebrating Discovery program, Ivan shared his chemical engineering research exploring how pressure and oxygen conditions affect cells in the lungs’ arteries. He also discussed his summer study abroad experience in Italy, focused on bicycles, sustainability, and culture.
Thank you, Ivan, for sharing your work and giving our scholars a glimpse of the opportunities ahead. We’re proud of you!

Over the past two weekends, four scholars—Elizabeth, Meera, Federico, and Pavithra —auditioned for the Arkansas Region 6 All-Region Choirs. Elizabeth competed in the Senior High Division (grades 10–12), while Meera, Federico, and Pavithra competed in the Junior High Division (grades 7–9). They joined nearly 1,700 students in grades 7–12 from across the region who were evaluated on their vocal performances of multiple songs, including selections in foreign languages.

Each scholar worked incredibly hard over the past two months to learn the songs, master their individual voice parts, and prepare to audition in front of judges. This process required them to develop accuracy, confidence, and musical expression across several challenging selections. Their dedication and commitment to musical excellence came through in their auditions.

We are thrilled to announce that Meera, Federico, and Pavithra have been selected for the All-Region Choir! These three scholars will participate in the All-Region Clinic and Concert on November 7 at the Arend Arts Center at Bentonville High School. We are incredibly proud of all four scholars for their hard work and achievements. Please join us in congratulating them!

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT - Blake Sostrin is an Honors Biology student at the University of Arkansas, where he maintains a 4.0 GPA and expects to graduate in May 2028. Originally focused on a path to medical school, Blake has used his college experience to explore a broader range of interests in science, medicine, leadership, and professional development.

At Arkansas, Blake has completed more than 250 hours of undergraduate food science research while pursuing physician-shadowing experiences in pathology, family medicine, orthopedic surgery, and sports medicine. He has also emerged as a campus leader through Sigma Phi Epsilon, serving as Vice President of the SigEp Learning Community and helping lead academic and professional-development programming for a chapter of nearly 300 students. His work has included collaborating with university faculty and administrators and helping develop an alumni mentorship and internship program.

Blake credits Haas Hall with preparing him to embrace both challenge and opportunity. Academically, the school taught him to work through difficult material, ask questions, advocate for himself, and hold himself to a high standard. His experience playing soccer at Haas Hall was equally meaningful, teaching him teamwork, balance, and the importance of making room for the interests and relationships that enrich life beyond academics.

Most importantly, Blake remembers teachers and coaches who invested in him as a person, not simply as a student or athlete. As he takes on leadership and mentorship roles of his own, he strives to provide that same encouragement to others.

Whether his future ultimately leads to medicine, science, business, or a combination of those interests, Blake believes Haas Hall gave him the academic foundation, confidence, and curiosity to continue challenging himself and pursue opportunities wherever they may lead.

After graduating from Haas Hall Academy Bentonville in 2021, Lexi attended Baylor University, earning her bachelor’s degree in May 2025. She has since returned to Bentonville as a medical student at the Alice L. Walton School of Medicine, where she is pursuing her MD and working toward becoming a physician.

Lexi credits Haas Hall with giving her something that proved especially valuable as she moved into increasingly challenging academic environments: confidence in her own abilities.

Her experience at Haas Hall taught her that she could succeed when challenged and encouraged her to pursue opportunities outside her comfort zone. At Baylor, that confidence helped her become deeply involved in academics, personal development, and service to others—experiences that ultimately helped lead her toward medicine.

She also points to the breadth of her Haas Hall education as an important part of her preparation. Strong science and mathematics instruction provided an academic foundation for college and medical school, while her teachers in English, the arts, and humanities helped her develop as a more well-rounded and service-minded individual.

Most importantly, Lexi remembers faculty who were personally invested in her growth. That influence continues today as she prepares for a career devoted to serving others through medicine.
