Thank you to everyone who attended this week's Airport Workshop in Tempe, AZ.

Day three of ACPA's 2026 Airport Workshop started off strong with a presentation from Jelena Stevanovic from the City of Phoenix, who provided an update on capital programs for the three airports in Phoenix's aviation system.

Then members from the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and their Taxiway U design team participated in an Alternate Delivery roundtable with discussions focused on why alternate delivery methods are chosen for complex airfield infrastructure projects.

The morning closed with the Taxiway U project team delivering a presentation on the overall project that will be the subject of this afternoon's airport tour.

Yesterday day two of the 2026 Airport Workshop kicked off with Dr. Dan Offenbacker talking about the research being performed at the FAA technical Center to advance airfield concrete performance. He highlighted the upcoming full scale testing of Construction Cycle 10 which will be used to extend airfield concrete structural life from the current 20-year FAA standard to 40 years.

Dan King with the CP Tech Center also hosted a panel of ACPA contractor members to discuss unique challenges contractors face with airfield paving projects while ACPA's Sarah Dalton covered mix design development best practices. And this is just a small peek into the discussions happening in the room!

Through the rehabilitation of the George Bush Intercontinental Airport Runway, the team demonstrated how pavement preservation can deliver meaningful environmental, economic, and operational benefits.

The result was a safer, FAA-compliant runway with an extended service life, completed without disrupting airport operations and at a fraction of the cost of reconstruction. This project serves as an excellent example of resilient infrastructure stewardship and sustainable construction in action.

Last week, ACPA was well represented at the American Concrete Institute's Fall Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, where Senior Director of Technical Services Eric Ferrebee participated in key committees focused on advancing concrete pavement design and construction practices. The Fall Convention brought together concrete industry professionals from all backgrounds to develop guidance and reports to further the state of the practice.

Ferrebee contributed to discussions within Committee 325 (Concrete Pavements), Committee 327 (Roller-Compacted Concrete Pavements), and other technical groups responsible for developing industry guidance, specifications, and reports. He also shared updates on ACPA initiatives and highlighted the organization's contributions through technical resources and tools such as PavementDesigner, helping support the continued advancement of concrete pavement best practices.
