If you're looking for something fun to do tonight....here you go! Loads of talent tonight in Rusk, Texas! Come out and support the cast and our historic Cherokee Civic Theatre!

It's Opening Night for "Dearly Departed"! Weather permitting, a reception will be held an hour before the show starts.

When the family patriarch, Bud Turpin (played by Brandon Gentry) drops dead unexpectedly, his eccentric family members try and organize him a dignified funeral. His widow Raynelle Turpin (Amy McCalister) is focused on what should be carved onto the headstone while their eldest son Ray-Bud (Jarrod Garbutt) must deal with the financial stresses that come with paying for the funeral service. Ray-Bud is supported by his loving wife Lucille (Rebecca Bahr) who does her best to offer everyone southern hospitality during trying times. Meanwhile, Raynelle’s younger son Junior (Luke Petri) deals with both his business going under and a marriage that is falling apart with his wife Suzanne (Megan Bowman).

Aunt Marguerite (Debra Petri) must deal with her lazy unemployed son Royce (Nicholas McCalister) while the Turpin’s youngest daughter, Delightful (Kellie Jones) handles the grief by eating junk food. With Reverend Ho**er (Corey Folmsbee) presiding over the funeral arrangements, the Turpin family friends such as Veda (Kathy Dethlefs) and Norval (James Crump), Nadine (Kylaney Breen), Juanita (Danyka Roby), and Ray-Bud’s boss Clyde (Yohanan Munoz) offer all the support they can.

The Joy of Life Singers are also featured and include Christine Dominguez, Richard Salazar, Brandon Gentry, Susan Haines, Kylaney Breen, Kara Cunningham, and Sheilah O’Heaney along with pianist Allen Dotson.

Advance Tickets Non-Member for all shows are $13 students (Age 4 to 18) and $15 adults. At-the-door tickets are $18 each. https://buy.ticketstothecity.com/purchase.php?event_id=20304

Tucked away in Rusk, Texas State Railroad - Rusk Depot is where you go when you want a day that feels a little different from the usual weekend routine. You pull up, hear the whistle in the distance, and step into that old-school rail atmosphere with vintage details, open skies, and the kind of excitement that starts building before the train even leaves the station. You climb aboard, settle into your seat, and watch the East Texas scenery roll by with tall trees, quiet stretches, and that smooth, steady rhythm of the tracks. You take in the historic charm, the scenic ride, the photo-worthy views, and the simple fun of slowing down for a while. The depot itself adds to it with friendly staff, classic railroad touches, and plenty of moments that make the whole trip feel special. Its easy to plan, worth the ticket, and laid-back enough for families, couples, or anyone wanting a low-key outing. You leave feeling like you found one of those local experiences people remember and tell their friends about.
