Dutch elm disease (DED) has devastated populations of American elm in the US, but breeding and selection programs have identified and sold some cultivars which are disease-resistant.

In a recently completed study, MITPPC researchers tested DED resistance to inform whether to continue using cultivars. They tested three commercially sold disease-resistant elm varieties by infecting them with the DED fungus. All varieties showed only minor wilting a year later, while untreated and susceptible trees died, so the resistance appears to hold up against today’s pathogen.

The results support continuing to plant these varieties in cities and restoration projects. The authors also recommend planting a mix of resistant types and re-testing periodically, in case the fungus evolves to overcome them.

A bat took the scenic route to Minnesota. 🦇

Over the past year, the Minnesota Zoo and our partners at Audubon Upper Mississippi River have been installing Motus stations across the state. This growing network across North and South America helps researchers track the movements of migratory wildlife.

Recently, the Zoo’s Motus station and other regional stations detected a Hoary Bat that was tagged by researchers in California. After traveling to Texas, the bat headed north—all the way to Minnesota!

Researchers know little about Hoary Bat migration and are curious why this bat traveled north at this time of year, where it will go next and whether this journey is more common than we realize.

As migratory bat populations continue to decline, these insights could be important for their conservation. We’ll be watching to see where this bat goes next! 🦇

This work has been funded by the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources.
