This week, the Skowhegan Area High School Outing Club focused on an important outdoor skill: drinking water safety!
Students explored why it's important to plan ahead and pack enough water for their activity, weather conditions, and time outdoors. We discussed the risks of drinking directly from natural water sources (even when the water looks clean!), what potential contaminants to watch out for, and why treating water before drinking it is so important.
We also explored different water purification methods, the pros and cons of each, and when they might be most useful. To put their knowledge into practice, students got hands-on experience using some of the water filters generously provided by Move More Kids!!
A few important takeaways: 💦 Clear water doesn't always mean safe water! 💦 Always bring enough drinking water and have a backup plan. 💦 Know how to properly filter or treat water before drinking from natural sources. 💦 Being prepared helps keep outdoor adventures safe, fun, and enjoyable!
Check out those before-and-after pictures! 🤯
P.S. No students actually drank the filtered water — the pose was simply for the picture! 😂
