Did you know? Spring Hill was overwhelmed with grasshoppers not once but twice!

In the summer of 1874, grasshoppers swarmed Spring Hill. They devoured everything green, then moved on to eat blankets, coats, curtains, leather harnesses, pitchfork and hoe handles, and fence posts.

The grasshoppers polluted the water, ruined vegetable gardens and cash crops, and made cattle, pigs, and chickens inedible because “many grasshoppers the animals ate flavored the meat.”

The second grasshopper takeover happened during a drought, shortly after the 1929 stock market crash. Many farm owners didn’t have water for their livestock and were forced to sell their animals.

Chief Jim Sutterby helped load the truck so it could be properly disposed of.

Thank you for helping keep these drugs out of our water streams and out of the wrong hands.
