Springdale scholars were treated to an action-packed performance of “Colpi di Maschera – Mask Mayhem,” a contemporary rendition of traditional Italian Commedia dell’Arte theatre by three Italian actors. The week before all scholars participated in a workshop with Theatre Squared to better understand this style of theatre and its influence on Shakespeare, as well as on many contemporary films and TV shows. Haas Hall would like to thank the Italian Consulates of Houston and San Francisco, as well as the Italian Department at the University of Arkansas for their support in bringing this rich cultural experience to our stage!

Several Springdale Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 scholars had the privilege of spending time with a licensed architect, Meredith Coan Barnes, and a dual licensed architect/engineer, Holly Vetsch. The duo, representing WER Architects, made a short presentation about careers in architecture and engineering and then engaged scholars in a hands-on building activity. Each group created a structure using white cardstock, decorated it with markers and colorful tape, and finally added puff balls and pipe cleaners for landscaping. The scholars provided information about their models and each was photographed. Later, the architects used AI software to create architectural renderings of each group’s model.

Over the past two weekends, four scholars—Elizabeth, Meera, Federico, and Pavithra —auditioned for the Arkansas Region 6 All-Region Choirs. Elizabeth competed in the Senior High Division (grades 10–12), while Meera, Federico, and Pavithra competed in the Junior High Division (grades 7–9). They joined nearly 1,700 students in grades 7–12 from across the region who were evaluated on their vocal performances of multiple songs, including selections in foreign languages.

Each scholar worked incredibly hard over the past two months to learn the songs, master their individual voice parts, and prepare to audition in front of judges. This process required them to develop accuracy, confidence, and musical expression across several challenging selections. Their dedication and commitment to musical excellence came through in their auditions.

We are thrilled to announce that Meera, Federico, and Pavithra have been selected for the All-Region Choir! These three scholars will participate in the All-Region Clinic and Concert on November 7 at the Arend Arts Center at Bentonville High School. We are incredibly proud of all four scholars for their hard work and achievements. Please join us in congratulating them!

Scholars also played German language acquisition games and practiced conversing with each other in German using new vocabulary words.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT - Blake Sostrin is an Honors Biology student at the University of Arkansas, where he maintains a 4.0 GPA and expects to graduate in May 2028. Originally focused on a path to medical school, Blake has used his college experience to explore a broader range of interests in science, medicine, leadership, and professional development.

At Arkansas, Blake has completed more than 250 hours of undergraduate food science research while pursuing physician-shadowing experiences in pathology, family medicine, orthopedic surgery, and sports medicine. He has also emerged as a campus leader through Sigma Phi Epsilon, serving as Vice President of the SigEp Learning Community and helping lead academic and professional-development programming for a chapter of nearly 300 students. His work has included collaborating with university faculty and administrators and helping develop an alumni mentorship and internship program.

Blake credits Haas Hall with preparing him to embrace both challenge and opportunity. Academically, the school taught him to work through difficult material, ask questions, advocate for himself, and hold himself to a high standard. His experience playing soccer at Haas Hall was equally meaningful, teaching him teamwork, balance, and the importance of making room for the interests and relationships that enrich life beyond academics.

Most importantly, Blake remembers teachers and coaches who invested in him as a person, not simply as a student or athlete. As he takes on leadership and mentorship roles of his own, he strives to provide that same encouragement to others.

Whether his future ultimately leads to medicine, science, business, or a combination of those interests, Blake believes Haas Hall gave him the academic foundation, confidence, and curiosity to continue challenging himself and pursue opportunities wherever they may lead.

At HHA Fayetteville, it’s a friendly competition every Wednesday in Mr. Stout’s room when the junior high quiz bowl players meet to practice for tournament play. It’s especially lively when a few upperclassmen from the senior high team come to help out and give tips to the younger players.

After graduating from Haas Hall Academy Bentonville in 2021, Lexi attended Baylor University, earning her bachelor’s degree in May 2025. She has since returned to Bentonville as a medical student at the Alice L. Walton School of Medicine, where she is pursuing her MD and working toward becoming a physician.

Lexi credits Haas Hall with giving her something that proved especially valuable as she moved into increasingly challenging academic environments: confidence in her own abilities.

Her experience at Haas Hall taught her that she could succeed when challenged and encouraged her to pursue opportunities outside her comfort zone. At Baylor, that confidence helped her become deeply involved in academics, personal development, and service to others—experiences that ultimately helped lead her toward medicine.

She also points to the breadth of her Haas Hall education as an important part of her preparation. Strong science and mathematics instruction provided an academic foundation for college and medical school, while her teachers in English, the arts, and humanities helped her develop as a more well-rounded and service-minded individual.

Most importantly, Lexi remembers faculty who were personally invested in her growth. That influence continues today as she prepares for a career devoted to serving others through medicine.

Thirteen National Beta members from Haas Hall Academy Springdale celebrate their recent participation in the Arkansas Regional Leadership Summit in Benton. These scholars were announced as national qualifiers of the following challenges:
• Being Better Betas
• Beta Blitz
• Collaboration Connection

National Beta Regional Leadership Summits bring together students from multiple states for 1-2 day events. During that time, students work with interactive speakers who engage members through introspective exercises and team-building activities. Clubs can also participate in team-based leadership challenges which test their communication, critical thinking, creativity, presentation, and collaboration skills. Their victories at this level provide the opportunity to compete at the national level.

The National Convention will be held at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas during Summer 2027. If you or a corporation you know would like to sponsor scholars and help them compete in the Summer of 2027, please contact Dr. Jami Forrester at [email protected].

Haas Hall Scholars Shine at National History Day!

We're thrilled to celebrate six Haas Hall Academy scholars who represented Arkansas at the National History Day contest this summer at the University of Maryland!

The individual exhibit, "A Stand Against Corruption in the Coalfields," won Senior Overall Project for the State of Arkansas and earned a Top 10 finalist spot at nationals, competing against nearly 3,000 students from across the country and around the world.

The 2026 theme — Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History — challenged students to conduct year-long historical research projects. Our scholars rose to the occasion, showcasing the academic excellence and dedication that defines Haas Hall. They competed in the exhibit, performance, and paper categories.

Beyond the competition, students toured Washington, D.C., the Holocaust Museum, the Capitol Building with Rep. Steve Womack’s liaison, and the University of Maryland campus.

Congratulations to our outstanding scholars and their advisor, Dr. Jami Forrester! Thank you to all our sponsors who made this incredible experience possible.

Dr. Jami Forrester has been named a Top 10 Finalist for the Gilder Lehrman National History Teacher of the Year. She was one of 60 who were chosen from state and international winners to qualify for this honor. It is quite an honor to win State History Teacher of the Year, but to make the Top 10 in Nationals is a great accomplishment. The winner of the National History Teacher of the Year will be announced in October. Just another example of the great teaching happening at Haas Hall Academy at the Jones Center!
