The Greene County Board of Supervisors has approved a Social Media policy. To read the policy in full click the following link: https://www.greenecountyva.gov/DocumentCenter/View/1893/Social-Media-Policy-approved-10272026-PDF

Please remember this page is not monitored 24/7 and is meant to release important information to the public in a timely fashion. You may/may not get a timely response back, especially during emergency situations when staff is dealing with the emergency itself. While social media is inherently viewed as instant give and take, it is not the case with County pages as staff does not work around the clock to monitor pages. If you have an emergency, call 911. To sign up to receive emergency alerts, visit https://public.alertsense.com/SignUp/?RegionId=2182 and sign up with your address so it can be geo-coded to your location. For every day questions, visit the county website and find the department you need and call the number listed on that page if you cannot find an answer to your question on the FAQs. There is also a staff directory. For the Treasurer, Sheriff, Circuit Court Clerk, Commonwealth Attorney and Commissioner of Revenue go under "Your Government" and "Local Government" as they are separate as constitutional offices. Additionally, emails for the Board of Supervisors and specific questions to them can be found on the website as they are not monitoring the social media accounts.

The Greene County Community Park will be closed to visitors beginning October 28, 2026, until further notice due to construction within the park. Construction on a new pavilion and new parking is under way within the park and the heavy machinery required shuts the park down for the safety of residents. We will notify everyone when it's able to be reopened. During the construction over the next several months this will happen periodically. Please check the website before going over to the park. https://alrt.se/u/GPkEtjsO7Le

Greene County Invites Residents to Share Their Input at Flood Preparedness Open House in November

STANARDSVILLE, VA — Greene County invites residents to a Community Open House on Monday, November 9, 2026, to discuss the Greene County Resilience Plan for Flood Preparedness. The event will take place from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the County Administration Building in the Board of Supervisors Meeting Room, located at 40 Celt Road in Stanardsville.

Flooding is something our community knows all too well. From roads that become difficult to travel to areas that experience repeated flooding, these events can affect our daily lives and create challenges for daily travel. Greene County is working on a plan to identify projects that could help reduce flooding impacts and explore opportunities to fund those improvements.

We want to hear from you! Residents know their neighborhoods and communities best, and your experiences can help us better understand where improvements are needed. You don't need to be a flooding expert to participate. Whether you've dealt with flooding at your home, encountered road closures, or simply want to help Greene County prepare for the future, your input matters!

We're making this a family-friendly event, with light refreshments and kid-friendly activities available. Stop by when you can, stay as long as you'd like, and leave when you need to. We hope you'll take a little time to join the conversation and help us plan for a more resilient Greene County.

Event Details:
When: Monday, November 9, 2026 | 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Where: County Administration Building, Board of Supervisors Meeting Room | 40 Celt Road, Stanardsville, VA 22973

Greene County Announces Leadership Appointments for Water and Sewer Department

STANARDSVILLE, VA – Greene County is pleased to announce the appointment of Greg Lunsford as Director of the Water and Sewer Department, effective January 4, 2027, and the appointment of Robert Griffith as the County's newly created Director of Operations for the Water and Sewer Department. Currently, Griffith is serving as the County's Interim Water and Sewer Director.

“These leadership appointments reflect Greene County's commitment to maintaining a high-performing utility system while strengthening operational management, regulatory compliance, infrastructure planning, and customer service for County residents and businesses,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Steve Catalano.

"Greene County has made significant investments in its water and sewer infrastructure, and these appointments position us well for the future," said County Administrator Cathy Schafrik. "Greg's experience as a local government executive and utility leader, combined with Robert's extensive technical expertise and operational leadership, will provide a strong foundation for the continued growth and success of our Water and Sewer Department."

Lunsford brings more than two decades of leadership experience in local government, utility management, public administration, and organizational development. He currently serves as the Town Manager for the Town of Elkton, where he has overseen multiple departments and led major utility infrastructure initiatives, including multimillion-dollar water and wastewater improvement projects. During a previous tenure with Greene County, Lunsford served as Director of Water & Sewer and was responsible for launching the County's standalone Water & Sewer Department, overseeing its transition from the Rapidan Service Authority, securing regulatory approvals, hiring staff, establishing budgets and billing systems, and procuring operational equipment.

“I am excited and honored to return to Greene County and assist with the important ongoing infrastructure work initiated by County leadership,” Lunsford said. “I feel very fortunate for the opportunity to work with the Greene County team again.”

As Director of Operations, Griffith will oversee the department's day-to-day operational functions and provide leadership across the County's water and wastewater systems. Griffith brings more than 18 years of progressively responsible experience in water and wastewater treatment operations, utility management, regulatory compliance, and personnel supervision. He currently serves as Greene County's Water Treatment Plant Supervisor and previously held utility management and chief operator positions with Culpeper County Environmental Services. He holds Virginia Class I Waterworks and Class I Wastewater Works Operator licenses and has extensive experience working with state regulatory agencies, including the Virginia Department of Health and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.

In addition to his technical expertise, Griffith has demonstrated exceptional leadership through management positions with multiple local utilities and through his public service as an elected member of the Page County Board of Supervisors. His experience includes budgeting, personnel management, capital project oversight, regulatory reporting, and community engagement.

"Robert has earned the respect of his colleagues through his professionalism, technical knowledge, and dedication to serving our community," Schafrik said. "His leadership during this transition period has been invaluable, and we are excited to have him continue serving Greene County in this important new role."

“Greene County has an outstanding team of utility professionals who are committed to providing safe, reliable service to our customers," Griffith said. "I am excited for the opportunity to continue to work with them and look forward to working alongside Greg and our staff to strengthen operations, support future infrastructure needs, and continue delivering high-quality service to the community."

With these appointments, Greene County continues to build a leadership team focused on operational excellence, strategic infrastructure investment, regulatory compliance, and responsive customer service as the County prepares for future growth and development. https://alrt.se/u/1QeKUjsm74K

Periodic Park Closures Begin October 26 for Planned Improvements

The Greene County Parks and Recreation Department advises residents that beginning October 26, 2026, the Greene County Community Park will experience periodic closures during construction. Planned improvements include expanded parking, sidewalk improvements, and a new pavilion. Work is expected to take approximately three months from start to finish.
Closures may affect portions of the park or require temporary full closures, depending on construction activities. Visitors should follow posted signs and stay clear of construction areas. The County will strive to alert the public when closures are happening, including a Public Notice at the top of the website at http://www.greenecountyva.gov, and through the non-emergency alert system. Signs will also be posted at the park for each time closures happen, whether partial or full closure, so be watchful for that. To sign up for alerts from Greene County, visit https://greenecountyva.gov/343/Alerts-Notifications and choose your non-emergency groups in addition to emergency alerts.
These improvements will enhance access and provide additional space for recreation and community gatherings. We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as we work to improve the park.
Residents can always call the Parks and Recreation office at 434-985-5226 for information as well or visit its website for program offerings and to sign up for events at https://greenecountyva.myrec.com/. https://alrt.se/u/oOVpFLs9aMk
