Dr. Larry Horton recently spoke with Sweet Home High School leadership students, sharing his experiences as both a school principal and district superintendent, with a special emphasis on his involvement with our local Rotary and Interact clubs.

Throughout his presentation, Dr. Horton emphasized the importance of servant leadership and the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self,” as guiding principles for making a positive difference in our community.

His message was especially timely as our leadership students prepare for upcoming canned food and penny drives, with the goal of providing holiday meals for 50 local families. Any additional funds raised will help provide Christmas gifts to families in need later in December.

Dr. Horton’s presentation was a meaningful reminder that leadership is about serving others and inspired our students to focus their time, energy, and resources on making a difference in our community.

We are excited to share that Amanda GaVette, Assistant Principal at Sweet Home Junior High, has been named the 2026 Oregon Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year by the Oregon Principals Association.

Amanda's dedication to students, staff, and the entire school community has made a tremendous difference at Sweet Home Junior High.

“Amanda is one of the very best in educational leadership,” said Sweet Home Junior High Principal Nate Tyler. “Her dedication, vision, and heart elevate everyone around her, making Sweet Home Junior High a better place to learn and work every day.”

The Sweet Home High School Leadership Class is hosting a canned food drive to help provide Thanksgiving baskets for local families in need.

Students are competing by grade level to earn spirit points, and everyone in the community is invited to help support this great cause.

Donations of canned food, nonperishable food items, and monetary contributions are all welcome.

Donations can be dropped off today in the Sweet Home High School commons area during parent-teacher conferences.

Thank you for helping our students make a difference in our community this Thanksgiving.

The Sweet Home Police Department is working on having a presence across our schools today as a show of community support after the tragedy in Bend. There are no threats against any of our schools.

When you see an officer please thank them for this show of support.

Today, our hearts are with the entire Bend community as they mourn the lives lost in the tragic shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School. This unimaginable act of violence has left families, students, educators, first responders, and neighbors facing profound grief.

As Bend begins the long road toward healing, may the community find strength in one another, comfort in shared support, and hope even in the darkest moments. Please keep the victims, their loved ones, and the entire Bend community in your thoughts.

You may see our officers around the Sweet Home schools tomorrow. This is a community support presence only, and there are no reported threats to any of our schools.

Please join us tonight for Homecoming as we gather to honor our friend, classmate, and teammate, Mason Flores.

We will hold a moment of silence and reflection at 6:50 p.m. before kickoff at 7 p.m.

All gate proceeds will be donated to the Flores family, and donation jars will be available on-site.

Memorial items will be displayed at the Husky Field entrance sign.

Wear green and gold to show support for our team and student body.

Our hearts are with Mason’s family, friends, classmates, teammates, and all who knew and loved him. We are grateful to see our community coming together to honor Mason, support his family, and care for one another.
