True public safety relies on a united front. Operation Iron Sight proves that when local, state, and federal agencies combine resources and expertise, we can dismantle violent networks and drive down fi***rm violence, not just in Wichita, but across the entire state of Kansas. We are proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with our law enforcement and prosecutorial partners to protect our communities.

Today, I joined DOJ and the ATF at a press conference in Wichita to announce Operation Iron Sights, a collaborative effort between federal, state, and local law enforcement to investigate, apprehend and prosecute dozens of people accused of fi***rms and drug trafficking-related crimes. Kansas has shown that you don’t have to choose between protecting the Second Amendment and protecting the public. We have some of the strongest pro-Second Amendment laws in the country, and we also have law enforcement that is relentless about going after the people who violate the law.

Today, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the RileyCountyPD arrested a Topeka man who arranged to meet minors for sexual acts.

On Oct. 7, at around 9:30 a.m., KBI agents conducted a search warrant at 2250 SW Ancaster Road, in Topeka. Mark W. Reutzel, 61, was arrested at around 10:50 a.m., for two counts of electronic solicitation for enticing a person whom he believed was a child to engage in unlawful sexual acts.

This arrest was related to a joint law enforcement operation that took place in September, in Riley and Geary counties, targeting offenders buying sexual relations. Following his arrest, deputies from the Riley County Police Department transported Reutzel to the Riley County Jail where he was booked on the charges.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Formal charges are pending. The investigation is ongoing.

We are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Sunday afternoon in Topeka.

The Topeka Police Department (TPD) requested KBI assistance at approximately 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team responded to the scene.

At approximately 4:28 p.m., two TPD officers arrived at a residence in the 3100 block of SW Chelsea Drive to locate Michael Wayne Schmidt, 47, of Topeka. Officers were searching for Schmidt in connection with a previous incident and arrest.

Schmidt allowed the officers inside the home, and following a brief discussion, officers attempted to take Schmidt into custody. Schmidt then fled to a back room, and officers followed. Inside the room, Schmidt retrieved a fi***rm. Officers issued verbal commands ordering Schmidt to drop the gun. Preliminary information indicates that during the encounter, Schmidt produced and fired a handgun, and one TPD officer discharged their duty weapon. Schmidt sustained a gunshot wound during the incident.

EMS responded to the scene, but Schmidt succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. No officers were injured during the incident.

This independent investigation aims to discover all events leading up to the officer-involved shooting. In police use of force cases, the KBI releases details to the public as soon as possible. This information is preliminary in nature and is based on evidence collected and early statements of the parties involved, witnesses, medical personnel, and others. It does not represent final or thorough findings, which take several weeks to complete.

The investigation remains ongoing. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be presented to the Shawnee County District Attorney for review.
