This past Saturday, Harpur’s Ferry had the honor of dedicating our newest ambulance, 7622, in recognition of Sal Caruana ’73, one of the three co-founders of our organization.
More than 53 years ago, Sal, alongside Adam Bernstein ’73 and Jon-Marc Weston ’73, helped establish Harpur’s Ferry with a simple but powerful mission: to ensure that members of the Binghamton University community had access to emergency medical care when they needed it. What began with a $125 used Cadillac hearse has grown into a 24/7/365 advanced life support ambulance service serving our campus and surrounding communities.
Sal’s impact on Harpur’s Ferry extends far beyond its founding. For more than five decades, he has remained a steadfast supporter of the organization, including spearheading the creation of the Harpur’s Ferry Endowment, helping ensure that future generations of student volunteers can continue the work that began in 1973.
Having 7622 bear Sal’s name is a small way to recognize the extraordinary legacy he helped build and the countless students, alumni, and community members who have carried it forward. As Sal so aptly reminded us, the success of Harpur’s Ferry belongs to every volunteer who has served and every life that has been touched along the way.
Sal, thank you for believing in Harpur’s Ferry, for continuing to invest in its future, and for showing generations of students what it means to serve. We are proud to carry your legacy forward. 💙💛
