Appraisal Districts were established in each county in Texas in 1981 to appraise each property at fair market value as of January 1 of each year for ad valorem tax purposes. ❌ MYTH: The appraisal district raises property values to increase taxes.
✅ FACT: VCAD does not set tax rates.

The appraisal district's job is to estimate market value based on marketplace activity and property characteristics. Taxing entities such as cities, counties, schools, and special districts set their own tax rates.
Understanding the difference helps make the property tax process a little less confusing.

🏡 We get this question all the time:
"What exactly does the Appraisal District do?"
The Victoria Central Appraisal District determines the market value of property and administers exemptions according to the Texas Property Tax Code.
What we DON'T do: ❌ Set tax rates ❌ Collect property taxes ❌ Decide how tax dollars are spent
Think of us as the value side of the property tax equation.
