NEW AFPC SPECIAL REPORT!

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has accelerated population decline in its resource-rich outlying regions, which are dying off faster than the rest of the country. These areas power the nation’s oil, gas, and timber industries, making them both economic engines and human reservoirs. As working-age men are killed or sent to the front, labor shortages in vital industries deepen. Replacing these workers is increasingly difficult: rising xenophobia and legal barriers push migrants away, while improving conditions in Central Asia reduce the flow of foreign labor to Russia.

Mali’s Jihadist Surge Should Be A Wake Up Call | American Foreign Policy Council 05/12/2026

"It’s the most important story that most people aren’t watching.

Late last month, Islamist militants affiliated with Jama’at Nusrat al Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM), an al-Qaeda affiliate active in Africa’s lawless Sahel region, spearheaded a series of coordinated attacks across the nation of Mali. Over the span of two days, the group – working in tandem with ethnic Tuareg separatists – struck military targets in and around the capital, Bamako, hit the country’s international airport, seized the northern city of Kidal, and assassinated the country’s defense minister." Read AFPC senior vice president Ilan Berman's latest for Forbes.
