This weekend is full of change—from wearing a costume to changing the clocks!

When out trick-or-treating, take steps to have a safe and fun Halloween by:
• Wearing bright, reflective costumes or adding reflective tape to be more visible when crossing streets.
• Walking on sidewalks if available and using crosswalks.
• Looking both ways before crossing the street.
• If driving, be alert. There will likely be more pedestrians on the roads and in places where you don't expect them. Slower speeds save lives!

Do you plan on going out to a party or gathering? Take steps to stay safe:
• If choosing to drink, decide how much you want to drink,
• how late you want to stay out,
• and, importantly, how you will get home. Don't drink and drive!

This week is National Lead Prevention Week. This year's theme "Keep Kids Safe from Lead", highlights the importance of protecting children from lead exposure.

Get the facts: Lead is highly toxic, especially to developing minds and bodies. Even small amounts can potentially cause health effects. Children younger than 6 are especially susceptible because their bodies are still developing, and they tend to put hands or objects in their mouths. Children under 6 have lead exposure hazards from lead in deteriorated paint, dust, or soil. Lead can also contaminate water.

Get your child tested: A blood test is the best way to find out if a child has lead poisoning. Many children with elevated blood lead levels look and act healthy and may not have noticeable symptoms. Talk to your child's healthcare provider about whether or not they should be tested especially if you live in or spend time in a home built before 1978. Early detection can help connect children and families with resources to reduce exposure and protect their health.

Get your home tested: If buying or renting a pre-1978 home, sellers and landlords must disclose known lead-based paint information. Homes built before 1978 may contain lead-based paint, particularly if older paint is peeling, chipping, or deteriorating. Consider having your home tested by a qualified professional to identify potential lead hazards.

The state of Illinois recently changed the naloxone brand it uses from Narcan to Padagis. The medication naloxone is the same; it is just being distributed under the new name “Padagis.” Naloxone is a lifesaving, non-addictive medication, administered as a nasal spray, that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose when used in time. If you or someone you care for uses opioids, it is especially important to carry naloxone and know how to use it.

Naloxone is available for free to Lake County residents and community members. Visit the Health Department's Naloxone Saves Lives page (https://www.lakecountyil.gov/4703/Naloxone-Saves-Lives) to learn more about naloxone and place an order today!
