Dupage Airport Aircraft Incident 05/13/2026

Dupage Airport Aircraft Incident

At approximately 10:01 a.m., units from the West Chicago Fire Protection District responded to an Alert 3 on Runway 33 at DuPage Airport.

A single-engine aircraft was preparing to depart but could not achieve the necessary speed for takeoff. The attempt was aborted, and the pilot tried to bring the aircraft to a stop. The aircraft overran the end of Runway 33 and continued into a grassy area. While in the grass, the aircraft struck a sign, which resulted in damage to its left wing and body. The aircraft came to a stop shortly after the collision.

The impact caused a fuel leak in the left wing. Personnel from the DuPage Airport Authority, assisted by West Chicago Fire Protection District crews, responded quickly to stop the leak and contain the spilled fuel.

Three people were on board the aircraft at the time of the incident. All three exited the aircraft safely without any injuries.

Once the fuel leak is contained, the DuPage Airport Authority will coordinate the removal and transport of the aircraft to a designated hangar.

Annual Fire Safety School Visits

West Chicago firefighters began their annual fire safety school visits today at Wegner School. Fourth-grade students participated in hands-on training with the Department’s mobile fire safety classroom trailer. Inside the trailer, students learned about the importance of smoke detectors, staying low in smoke, and developing home escape plans. The fire safety visits will continue throughout the month of May at various schools across West Chicago.

Reminder - Change Your Clocks, Change Your Smoke Detector Batteries!

Spring ahead - it's time to change our clocks this weekend. It is a great reminder to change our batteries in our smoke detectors and give them a good cleaning. If you need to replace your detectors because they are 10 years or older, replace them with sealed battery 10 year units and you won't have a battery to replace. Check out our website for more fire safety information!

West Suburban Fire Rescue Alliance Members Receives Award

The West Suburban Fire Rescue Alliance (WSFRA) Training Committee was recently selected as a recipient for a 2026 Frontline Wellness Award issued by the 100 Club of Illinois. West Chicago Fire Protection District is one of eight area fire departments that participate in the functional cooperative group known as the "Alliance". In addition to working very closely on day-to-day operations, the Alliance is hyper-focused on delivering an exceptional training program to its members. A key component of the training program is annual hands-on rapid intervention training, which is designed to train members on skills related to fireground survival and saving fellow firefighters.

The Alliance was recognized through this Wellness Award for its' proactive commitment to first responder wellness, readiness, and operational resilience. We congratulate our fellow Alliance partners, and we are proud to be one of the founding members of the WSFRA!
