**FEDERAL JURY CONVICTS MAN FOLLOWING WEST MEMPHIS DRUG INVESTIGATION**

A federal jury has found 52-year-old Elbert Nichols guilty on all six federal charges following an investigation involving the West Memphis Police Department’s Narcotics Unit.

The investigation began in April 2024, when WMPD narcotics officers conducted a controlled purchase of fentanyl pills from Nichols using a confidential informant. During a subsequent arrest attempt in May 2024, Nichols fled from officers, striking a police vehicle, driving through a chain-link fence, and leading officers on a pursuit.

After Nichols was apprehended, officers discovered approximately 50 fentanyl pills, more than 80 grams of methamphetamine, and a loaded Smith & Wesson fi***rm inside his vehicle.

Following a four-day trial, the federal jury deliberated for approximately six hours before finding Nichols guilty on all six counts, including fentanyl distribution, possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and methamphetamine, illegal fi***rm possession, possession of a fi***rm in furtherance of drug trafficking, and assault on a federal law enforcement officer.

Due to his prior criminal history, Nichols was also classified as an armed career criminal. He faces significant federal prison time, with sentencing still pending.

**This case is an example of the continued work being done by the West Memphis Police Department’s Narcotics Unit to investigate drug trafficking, remove dangerous drugs and fi***rms from our streets, and hold offenders accountable.**

Great work by our officers and all federal partners involved in bringing this case to a successful conclusion.

💙🚔 WHAT A MONTH, OCTOBER! 🍂🎃

October was definitely one for the books! From fall festivals and trunk-or-treats to school visits, community events, and everything in between, our officers have been BUSY!

The West Memphis Police Department and our Community Engagement Unit would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to every school, organization, business, church, and community partner who invited us out and allowed us to be part of your events this month!

We truly appreciate every invitation, every warm welcome, and every opportunity to connect with our community. 💙

October kept us on the move, but seeing the smiles, building relationships, and making memories made it all worth it!

Thank you, West Memphis, for always showing us love! We look forward to many more opportunities to serve and connect! 🚔💙
