Today marks 20 years since the West Yellowstone Police Department lost one of its own.
On October 22, 2006, Officer Patrick Roy Kramer, Badge #682, tragically lost his life in the line of duty while responding to a crash in the early morning hours. His patrol vehicle encountered icy road conditions, causing it to roll.
Patrick was more than just a police officer. He was a father, a son, a friend, a brother in blue, and a valued member of our community. Those who had the privilege of knowing him remember his smile, his dedication, and his willingness to serve others.
Patrick worked hard to pursue his dream of becoming a police officer, putting himself through the Montana Law Enforcement Academy before joining the West Yellowstone Police Department. His career and life were cut far too short, but his sacrifice and legacy will forever remain part of our department’s history.
Yesterday, we had the privilege of welcoming Patrick’s parents back to West Yellowstone. They graciously invited several local law enforcement officers, including some who had the honor of working alongside Patrick, to breakfast in his memory. During our time together, stories and memories of Patrick were shared, reminding us of the kind of person and officer he was. It was a meaningful opportunity to remember Patrick not just for the sacrifice he made, but for the life he lived and the impact he had on those around him. We are incredibly grateful to his parents for including us in such a special morning.
Twenty years may have passed, but time will never erase the sacrifice he made or the lives he touched.
Today, we honor Patrick’s memory, his dedication to our community, and the ultimate sacrifice he made while serving others. Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family, friends, and fellow officers, today and always.
Rest easy, Officer Kramer. We will take it from here.
