THROWBACK THURSDAY!

Today's photo was published in the Daily Globe of Oct. 15, 1942, with a story about the Junior Round Table Club, titled, "Two of Grade School Girls Who Helped Form Club in 1926 Still Active Members."

Here's the caption:

Saving on the family auto tires and gasoline, most of the members of the Junior Round Table club do their grocery shopping on bicycles. Left to right are Mrs. D.G. Iddings, Mrs. Lawrence Cooper, Mrs. E.H. Kain, Mrs. Gay Hower and Mrs. Kenneth Sall.

I've attached the story here, too.

TUESDAY TREASURES!

In the spirit of the Halloween season, I put a few "scary" words into the search engine for our archive databased. I finally got a hit on the word "skeleton," although it wasn't as scary as one would think.

This is a skeleton key from the Hotel Thompson. It has a brown Bakelite fob. The following is engraved of the fob: "Hotel Thompson, Worthington, Minn., Drop in Any Mail Box, We Guarantee Postage." The fob has one engraved room number and three different room numbers written on it.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT!

This looks like a pretty chic maternity dress -- made of mohair boucle, no less!

So where was Ethel's Maternity Fashion Shop located, you ask?

I did an online search. 1122 Fourth Ave. is that tan brick building located across from the Nobles County Library. I think it is now apartments, but I recall it being Fauskee Plumbing and Heating at one time?

TODAY IS DIA DE LOS MU***OS!

Today, Nov. 2, is observed as Dia de los Mu***os -- Day of the Dead -- in Mexican tradition.

An ofrenda (altar) for Dia de los Mu***os is set up in the Nobles County Heritage Center, 225 Ninth St., Worthington. Stop by and see it, learn about Dia de los Mu***os, color a Dia de los Mu***os poster and pick up a sugar skull pin or charm.

The Heritage Center is open until 4:30 p.m. today!

ANNALS OF LOCAL HISTORY!

While searching for other Halloween content, I happened upon this rather odd story in the Oct. 31, 1958, Globe, written by the fictional Turk O'Day, who usually focuses his Globe reporting on Worthington's King Turkey Day.

It seems that Turk composed a fanciful tale about a witch named Hazel that is perhaps an allegory for actual news happenings in the community, namely the building of a new sewage plant and silt flowing into Lake Okabena, which is still an issue!

Perhaps his tale will give you a chuckle. I think that was its intent.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

The photos here were taken in 1963 and 1964 during Halloween parties at what was then called the Crippled Children's School, later Lakeview School. I've attached the clipping from Saturday, Oct. 31, 1964, that provided details about the party.

Wishing you more TREATS than TRICKS on this Oct. 31!

THROWBACK THURSDAY!

Do you remember Halloween parties at the local library? What did you wear to the costume party?

I can't see that this photo was ever published in the Daily Globe in October 1958, but it was from the Globe photo archives at that time. And based on the bookcase and display behind, I'm guessing it was taken at Worthington's Carnegie Library.

I did find a feature page from Oct. 30, 1958, with a write-up on the library's Halloween party -- it just didn't use this particular photo. I've attached it here so you can draw your own conclusions!
